“An Interesting stop if you enjoy Civil War history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

The Museum of Southern History would be better named the Museum of the Civil War because the artifacts are almost totally associated with the Civil War. The collection in this small privately run museum includes many interesting items including uniforms, weapons, photos, diorama’s and more. There is also a well-stocked library containing hundreds of volumes covering all aspects of the conflict. The museum is staffed by friendly volunteers and charges a very modest entrance fee.

“Must see!”

This is one of the best museums in Jax's! One of the best Civil War museum's in the country. Has Lincoln funeral flag, Joe Johnston's pistol, Stonewall Jackson's epilitte's, 19th GA Battle Flag and much more.

“SMALL MUSEUM WITH LIMITED APPEAL”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013

Had often passed this place on Herschel St and it always appeared closed so was glad my MeetUp group leader managed to set up a tour for us. The museum is free but requests a "donation" of $3 which is certainly reasonable. It can be hard to contact them or to catch them open as it is completely run by volunteers--all of whom are very nice but definitely pro-Confederacy--so Yankees beware! :) All artifacts/displays have been locally donated so they aren't of major historical significance but do bring home the everyday, mundane reality of "Johnny Reb". The one exception--which can easily be overlooked if it isn't pointed out to you--is one of only 3 surviving union flags that draped Lincoln's coffin on its long, sad journey by train from DC to Springfield, IL. There is also a fairly extensive book collection available for study by southern history/civil war scholars. This place isn't for everyone but worth an hour to check out if you're curious.

“A wonderful museum one of the best we have ever visited”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

After we managed to find the building we realised we were in for the most wonderful experience. If you are looking for a Disney clone then you will not like this place. It is a real American treasure. We were shown round by people who genuinely love the place and knew their American history inside out, it was a privilege to talk to them as we learnt so much.

We were not rushed in any way and spent over three hours looking and asking questions, thank you to all the people who volunteer to help at this brilliant museum
