Description: The Sandollar was originally built in 1954 by a gentleman who lived in Fort George Island. This small but capable restaurant was able to capitalize on the booming American shrimp market from Mayport across the river. The business thrived and created the tradition of serving fresh and local seafood at low costs. This was when Heckscher Drive still had bridges that were made of wood and moved with the tide. After a while, the area demanded a larger facility and in 1988, a new building was constructed by Dwayne Williams, who owned La Cruise Casino and Restaurant in Mayport. He kept the tradition of providing customers with fresh, quality seafood at a low price. Today, under that same direction from the original owner, we look forward to bringing back the same great seafood that The Sandollar brought in when it opened. We are proud to be serving our local community for over 15 years now and will continue to give back and assure our locals that the next decade will provide the same great service, incredible food, and innovation that we are known for.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon we had lunch. Food was good and all was well until we received our check for $66 dollars. They ran the debit card and before signing we noticed that the debit card was being charged 15% over the original bill! While we usually tip well over 20%, we were so angry with the failure to disclose that the tip was included that we left only the 15%. All the while the "tip" portion of the check was left blank so it looked like there was an expectation of tipping. It detracted from an other wise nice experience.

We stayed overnight in an area hotel and asked for a place to eat. The fellow at the front desk suggested the Sandollar 10 miles up the road. The drive to the restaurant was beautiful after being on the interstate all day. You can dine inside or outside. We chose to eat in doors because it was a bit chilly and quite windy. But outside would offer very nice views. However, there is more to a restaurant. The food at the Sandollar was not so nice. I had the grouper fried with fries and Cole slaw $20.95. The cole slaw was pretty good. The fries were room temperature and on the greasy side. The hush puppies okay but greasy. The grouper? Not sure what that FISHY tasting fish was but it was definitely not like any grouper I have had. It was just weird. No salt. Very bland but Very fishy and not real white like grouper should be. We had ordered 2 of these dishes. Terrible. The waitress was very nice and apologized and said the manager would either give us something different on the menu or give us a discount on our food. We chose not to order anything else but when we got the bill there was No discount. My daughter had the Pasta Orleans $18. She says it was a little too salty and not spicy despite being described as a cajun dish. We paid and left and will not return.

It was our first time at the Sandollar and our family of 5 loved it! It was a gorgeous day to be outside on the water. The food was great and the service was wonderful. Chuck was our server and he did a fabulous job. Plus, his wit & laid back personality was a bonus to our visit.
We were just having a day up the coast from St. Augustine & stopping there for lunch made our day even better! Thank you!

The food was good, simple seafood. The waitstaff was amazing and took excellent care of us. However the sodas tasted funny because of the well water they were made with. Our waiter replaced them with bottled water free of charge.

We were hungry and the sign said lunch buffet. We are not buffet types but decided to try it out. It was about 2 pm and it was a gorgeous afternoon so we wanted to sit outside. The hostess, an older lady, said we would have a 20 minute wait to sit outside as there was only one waiter out there. We reluctantly sat inside - when our waiter came - a very perky very nice waitress - she asked what we wanted to drink - I said - drinks outside - and she said - I want to get outside, too so I'll be happy to move you outdoors and take your order out there. So we happily moved outside - but were wary of the hostess - she seemed to be mad about it. I order the Shrimp Po Boy - it was fabulous - would absolutely order it again - when the waitress asked what could be better - I said - make it cajun shrimp - so she brought over hot sauce which made it perfect. My daughter had a great bacon/chicken sandwich and my son had seafood fettucine with shrimp, scallops and crab. We all loved our food. Great place, great ambiance and nice view of river. Saw large container ships leaving as well as sailboats, etc. Would definitely go back.
