Huguenot Memorial Park

This is an interesting park located on A1A. There is overnight camping which seems to be very popular as you can park right on the water.

The major draw to Huguenot is that you can drive onto the beach, park and spend the day doing all kinds of water sports but be warned: THE TIDES ARE SEVERE AND THE TIDE COMES IN FAST!! Getting caught in the water is commonplace so be careful.

You can drive on this beach in certain areas without four wheel drive, but be mindful of where you are. On holiday weekends the traffic backs up on the highway to get in. The beach is packed with a variety of water sports including kite surfing.

It is a very cool place but weekdays would be a smarter time to visit if you are not adventurous. The traffic on the beach is non stop in the summer and there are kids of all ages everywhere so beware of your surroundings.

Low tide midweek is the best time to visit and it is very special when you are one of a very few driving out onto the beach and exploring this amazing part of the world.

Great beach. Can drive on beach and you can look across the inlet and see the ships at Mayport NS.......which now is home to the USS New York, the ship made from salvaged steel from the World Trade Center. Very cool!

We enjoyed driving onto the beach, parking and then walking along looking for shells and enjoying the space. It was December - so it was a little windy and cold, but just rug up and enjoy anyway. The best part was spending time with Shelley in the Nature Centre. She has set up a wonderful experience for kids and adults to learn more about the creatures of the area. Hands on activities and a wealth of knowledge that Shelley shared made this a really worthwhile stop.

Auto access with neat doggie park facilities. Tides must be checked and watched to avoid being stranded on or off the beach. Boat access to the beach. Few amenities and camping spaces as well as rougher water. More adult than family oriented. Fees very reasonable. Great ferry access through Mayport.

We stayed 5 nights at the Huguenot Memorial Park. If you don't mind boon docking (no hook-ups) this is a great spot to watch birds, boats, etc. many of the sites are waterfront. Our site faced the St John's River and was right across the water from the naval base. Once we got used to the helicopter traffic it was all good. Sadly, dogs were not allowed on the beach. The sites are fairly large, most are somewhat level, dump station and fresh water are available, as well as old showers and restrooms. The location pretty is convenient to Jacksonville, and the preferred Amelia Island.
