The Riverwalk and St John's River are valuable and beautiful gems for Jacksonville and a great place to spend an afternoon or bring an out of town guest. Unfortunately, the Riverwalk is in need of repair in several locations. It would be a shame if the city does not restore this magnificent site to its past glory. This past week we were able to attend a play at the Performing Arts Center and at the same time step outside and partake in a local "free" festival on the river with food, drinks and entertainment.

As usual we have stayed outside city in a small hotel, it took us 15 mins to drive to downtown. We have found free parking spot easily as it was weekend and there were no events. Prepare to pay up to $10 for parking in case of concert or so. The walk itself is small and offers more shopping and cheap looking souvenirs than walking experience, live music venue on the walk is very small (they have free concerts in weekends). Plan two hours to cross bridge to other side, take some pictures of downtown, see fountain and come back with the other bridge. In work days the tram is in service and is free, it may bring you back to downtown from the opposite side of the river if you don't want to walk.

The river and reiver views are beautiful and the fountain is stunning. That being said, the riverwalk itself is crumbling from age and inattention, and it is in a neighborhood that is sketchy.

My husband and I strolled down the riverwalk to enjoy the views of the St John's River. The views of the river are great, however, you must watch where you are walking as a lot of the planks are splintering and sticking up. The statues are nice, especially the ones dedicated to our service men and women. At one time it looked like it was a very popular place, especially to dock your boat and eat and/or shop; however, you can tell there have not been any boats stopping lately. Jacksonville could bring people back but putting a little into renovations.

The Jacksonville Riverwalk reminds me of Savannah, GA riverfront. For both riverfronts, I have had hotels with views of the river. The St. Johns river makes for a great backdrop to any walk.

I like Savannah, GA riverfront better, though. If I have a choice whether to stay here or Savannah on my way between NC and central Florida, Savannah wins. This one is still nice, though.
