Fire Island National Seashore

Fire Island National Sea Shore is THE place to relax, enjoy summer, and thank our lucky stars for a day off to visit. The only thing about it is the $10.00 parking fee which NYS charges - no other state charges for beach admission and with Long Island taxes being the highest in the nation, limiting beach access to paying customers makes this fee appear what it is: just another fee to support excessive government.

Fire Island is paradise. Since there are no cars and limited to boaters or ferry goers it is not crowded. The Island is quaint and there are plenty of great beaches.

The Fire Island National Seashore is a great destination for people who love the beach, nature and birdwatching. Before I moved to Florida, I took daily hikes from Robert Moses Parking Lot 5, passed the lighthouse, walked through Kismet and sometimes walked all the way to Fair Harbor. I joined the Great South Bay Audubon Society on one of their nature walks on September 17, 2011 and saw deer and lots of interesting birds. They have a Hawk Watch which is very crowded in the fall as the Fire Island Raptor Enumerators are doing their raptor counts. Fire Island also has red foxes but unfortunately never got photos of them. Be careful if you decide to walk through the beach to the different parts of the island. There is a nude beach between Robert Moses and Kismet, that I always stayed away from.

Our favorite place to spend a sunny summer afternoon. A real family beach. Beautiful wide sandy beach! A short ride from any where on Long Island as the island is about 11 miles wide and so where ever you are it is not far to get to Fire Island!
