Owner description: Since opening in August 1988, Blackhawk Museums has displayed classic automobiles and myriad exhibitions exemplifying art, technology and history. Local students, residents and international visitors enjoy educational presentations, cultural programs and volunteer opportunities. Since the beginning it has been home to the Blackhawk Automotive Museum with over 55 vintage, classic, rare and sports automobiles on display. These automobiles are regarded as works of art and range from the dawn of the motoring age through the 1960's. In 2015, a new exhibition, The Spirit of the Old West opened, telling the story of the western frontier from the perspective of both the Native Americans and the settlers before, during and after the expansion west. The exhibition features authentic artifacts from the period, a large diorama depicting key historic moments, scenes of wildlife from the frontier and other elements that bring the past to life. Other exhibitions on display include the Wheelchair Foundation Gallery and an exhibition of Juke Boxes from the Golden Age and vintage oil pumps.

“An awesome automotive time warp!”
Reviewed October 14, 2013 via mobile

I was lucky enough to visit this museum with my 1st graders class as a chaperone. The tour was fast enough paced to keep the 6 year olds attention, and the cars were COOL! It's definitely worth a visit, & don't forget to bring your Dad.

“Superb collection, displayed beautifully”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

I recently visited from the UK, staying friends who live virtually across the road from the Blackhawk Plaza, and it was casually mentioned whilst having a coffee that the building behind us housed a collection of classic cars. As a frequent visitor to UK classic car events I was intrigued, however I was totally unprepared for the sheer scale and quality of the exhibits. This is a stunning collection and contains many totally unique vehicles that were either coachbuilt to order in the heyday of 20's and 30's extravagance, or are later design prototypes built for the major motor shows through the 50's and 60's. If you are a car fan don't miss it, if you aren't, enjoy the superb craftmanship and the historical context provided by the informative display notes.

“Great for a Private Event”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

We attended a private event here. It was great to be able to walk around the beautifully kept cars and sip your wine. I suspect the food was done by an outside caterer but everything seemed very elegantly done.

“Good place for car enthusiasts”
Reviewed August 1, 2013 via mobile

I have been here twice and found it interesting both times. Some of the cars were the same but there were new displays also. It is a nice museum to visit if you like older interesting cars.

“Hidden Gem! Even if you are not a Car Enthusiast...”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

This place is awesome. It has a huge collection of rare and unique automobiles from all eras. The interior of the building shows the cars off really well and it's truly a sight to behold. The history and provenance of the cars is fantastic to read about. It's easy spend a couple of solid hours here - you will definitely want to take some photos too.

Generally, I am not very interested in cars or spending lots of time in museums and such, but this place is so much fun that everyone in our group really enjoyed it. I definitely plan to go back and it really is a "must see" if you are in the East Bay or even as a day trip from the city. The museum is located in Blackhawk plaza, which is nice because after you go to the museum you can stop for a cup of coffee, shop or have a nice meal. A great day trip. (I went during the summer and found it quite chilly inside the museum - suggest a sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold easily.)
