Owner description: Since opening in August 1988, Blackhawk Museums has displayed classic automobiles and myriad exhibitions exemplifying art, technology and history. Local students, residents and international visitors enjoy educational presentations, cultural programs and volunteer opportunities. Since the beginning it has been home to the Blackhawk Automotive Museum with over 55 vintage, classic, rare and sports automobiles on display. These automobiles are regarded as works of art and range from the dawn of the motoring age through the 1960's. In 2015, a new exhibition, The Spirit of the Old West opened, telling the story of the western frontier from the perspective of both the Native Americans and the settlers before, during and after the expansion west. The exhibition features authentic artifacts from the period, a large diorama depicting key historic moments, scenes of wildlife from the frontier and other elements that bring the past to life. Other exhibitions on display include the Wheelchair Foundation Gallery and an exhibition of Juke Boxes from the Golden Age and vintage oil pumps.

The Blackhawk Museum (sometimes also referred to as the Behring Auto Museum), located in the Blackhawk Plaza shoppng center, in Danville, CA, houses an outstanding collection of classic cars. The focus is on pre-WWII cars, but there are also some great post-war cars as well. Some of the cars rotate in and out, but there are a number of Bugattis, pre-war Mercedes, Duesenbergs, Rolls-Royce, and many other classics from both Europe and the US. The display setting is great, and wandering volunteer docents are always available to tell you more than what is printed on the displays. Local car clubs sometimes hold small shows in the parking lot outside the museum, so it's a good idea to check the museum's event calendar (not to avoid parking issues, but to possibly time your visit to a show of interest). Blackhawk Plaza itself is very pleasant to walk around, and is a nice place to bring small kids, as they have a nice outdoor play area, and kids also enjoy feeding the ducks in the plaza's "lagoon" and waterway. (Although the museum itself wouldn't really appeal to small children.) There are also a number of decent restaurants in the plaza, from burgers and sandwiches, to Mexican, to sushi, to Italian, to fine-dining. Great way to spend a half-day or so! The museum's architecture is also spectacular.

Beautiful setting with stores and eating opportunities in the same complex. Fun to wander around. The cars are interesting and the volume is not overwhelming.

The museum itself is beautiful and that's before you even see an automobile. If you have any interest in unique old cars and other classic memorabilia, this place can't be missed.

The location is a bit out of the way. Upon arrival you'll find stores and restaurants, if you need anything.

A collection of some of the most amazing car in the world. Even if your not a car enthusiast -which I'm not - the museum is somewhere the whole family will enjoy. Many of the one of a kind cars can be enjoyed as works of art not mechanical objects.
