Owner description: Since opening in August 1988, Blackhawk Museums has displayed classic automobiles and myriad exhibitions exemplifying art, technology and history. Local students, residents and international visitors enjoy educational presentations, cultural programs and volunteer opportunities. Since the beginning it has been home to the Blackhawk Automotive Museum with over 55 vintage, classic, rare and sports automobiles on display. These automobiles are regarded as works of art and range from the dawn of the motoring age through the 1960's. In 2015, a new exhibition, The Spirit of the Old West opened, telling the story of the western frontier from the perspective of both the Native Americans and the settlers before, during and after the expansion west. The exhibition features authentic artifacts from the period, a large diorama depicting key historic moments, scenes of wildlife from the frontier and other elements that bring the past to life. Other exhibitions on display include the Wheelchair Foundation Gallery and an exhibition of Juke Boxes from the Golden Age and vintage oil pumps.

“The best collection of old cars I have ever seen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

I first visited the Blackhawk Museum in August 2011 just after the Pebble Beach auctions on the Monday following the auctions entry was free and refreshments were also free. I can only describe the museum as Fantastic, the cars are all perfectly prepared and displayed with many in themed layouts, 2011 was the 50th anniversary of the 'E' Type Jaguar and an excellent display of the evolution of this superb 2 seat roadster was on show, there was also an excellent display of Ferraris with many very rare models. Many of the vehicles on display are very rare and nearly all the vehicles have data sheets close by giving good information. My only criticism is that it is very dark inside with the mood lighting so unless you have a very powerful flash the darker cars do not come out very well, however this did not prevent me from taking some excellent pictures that I have put into a powerpoint presentation to show in UK

“A Cut Above Most Automobile Museums”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

The Blackhawk Museum is a first-class, well designed structure where form follows function. Not knowing what to expect, the museum was a delightful surprise. This museum is located in the high-end shopping center ‘Blackhawk Plaza’ in Danville (also a delightful surprise) and it’s a great place to take kids of all ages (i.e. my partner and me).
What I enjoyed was that the classic automobiles are displayed as fine pieces of jeweled art or sculptures. Polished black floors and blackened ceilings and walls with carefully controlled spot lighting adding to the overall ambience and dynamic effect of the exhibit halls. My architectural and planning background kick in and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The Museum is sort out of the way but was certainly worth the trip.

Well displayed, very large exhibit of cars. The building is also very impressive. The museum also regularly hosts events. It's a great location for evening events too!

“advice for photographers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

Wonderful collection of cars, and helpful docents and staff in the research library. Only reason I comment is to advise photograhers that the museum is very dark and they do not allow tripods. I have no complaint with the no-tripod rule, but the fair balance should be a well-lighted museum so that people with non-professional grade photo equipment can capture decent images to remember these cars. The walls are black, the floor is black and the lighting is narrow-beam spotlights. Taking photos of black cars is almost hopeless without pro-grade equipment. Because they do not own most (or perhaps any) of the cars, there is no book on the collection either.

“animal lovers ahoy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2012

Great for animal-loving kids who want to find out more about the wildlife in these parts of the world. Not as boring for adults as most museums kids enjoy tend to be. I would highly recommend this.
