“Excellent family experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2014

My entire family was delighted with the food and the experience. Even though CIA is a teaching institution, Caterina de' Medici has the look and feel of an upscale Italian restaurant. The food had a terrific mix of somewhat chic, more involved dishes in addition to more traditional Italian, gourmet, comfort food. The braised beef in a Barolo wine sauce was extremely tender and flavorful. It was well complemented by one of their reasonably priced wines by the glass, Aglianico de Vulture. Perhaps my only mild disappointment was that the size of their wine pours were on the small size. The fusilli in lamb ragu sauce was amazing as was the sea bass. Our desert cheeses rocked - especially since our server asked for our style preferences and then delivered on a range of Italian cheeses that met our specifications. They brought five different cheeses that truly represented our choices. The entire bill was reasonable for a multi-course event and the service was outstanding. Our servers were preparing to go through their graduation event in about a week, so it is possible we had a strong, experienced staff. None-the-less, they were terrific. I cannot wait to go back!!

“A great evening for our first CIA experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

After reading mixed reviews for this CIA restaurant, we decided to risk it since it was the only CIA restaurant open on Mondays. We're glad we took the risk! We shared the bresaola for the first course - air cured need with shaved Parmesan. Our entrees were the duck breast and braised beef in Barolo. Both were great. We shared a tart of butternut squash and chocolate - a special for the evening. Excellent. We later learned that the mixed results for evenings at these restaurants is often dependent on the experience of the class. We must have had a class close to the end because our evening was special in every regard.

“The Emperor's New Restaurant”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2013

Is this place a joke? Could it be that people who say it is great are simply intimidated by its reputation and don't want to appear unsophisticated? The food was pleasant enough, though nothing to brag about, but the portions were microscopic and the meal was totally unbalanced, no potato or pasta or rice or intact veggie. We were so hungry afterwards that we went to another restaurant, and in case you think I'm a 21st century Diamond Jim Brady, I'm 5'7" and weigh all of 135 lbs.

To be fair, we attended a banquet dinner. Maybe as regular customers it would have been different. Our meal was as follows: a small salad with about a half dozen green leaves, a couple of strips of indifferent cheese, a few pieces of tired pear and about 1/8th of a walnut. This was followed by the two smallest pieces of chicken I have ever encountered sitting on about a tablespoon of vegetable puree, garnished with two tiny pieces of mushroom. That was it for the real food. The chicken was moist and well-cooked. The desert, an apple strudel, was very good, and perfectly reasonably sized for desert. And oh yes, the bread seemed stale. The kids doing the serving were pleasant and reasonably competent and the restaurant is pretty.

On reflection you have to wonder about a restaurant that bears the name of a 16th century French queen and regent who has often been accused of plotting the assassination of those inconvenient to the rule of her children.

“Not what I expected :(”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013 via mobile

While I have lived in the areas for quite some time, this was my first visit to Caterina. Decor and ambiance were fabulous but unfortunately, the experience goes down hill from there. Service was sketchy even wen allowing for the the fact that the waiters are students. Waiter frequently disappeared for 15 minutes at a time while we were left waiting for an item we requested. Food presentation was as expected for a premier cooking school but fisher were bland and uninspired. Dessert took 30 minutes and tiramisu was average at best. Come for the ambiance and not the food but expect to pay for it. Dinner for 2 with wine $150.

“Best Italian food ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013 via mobile

We took a trip to hyde park specifically to try the restaurants at the CIA. We were not disappointed. The Italian restaurant food was the best ever,. The service top notch.
