I've been to the Cottage a few times prior to my recent visit, but feel like I am constantly learning about this fascinating woman and it is probably because the guides have been different or the group raises new questions. But it is also because there is so much to see within this relatively small cottage. The introductory film is not to be missed. This was a most remarkable woman!

We didn't know what to expect the day we visited Val-Kill Cottage and we were really pleasantly surprised. This rather humble home with normal sized rooms, cluttered with mementos of her life and filled with comfortable furniture entertained everyone from the King and Queen of England to John F. Kennedy when he was running for President. It was fascinating to picture the visits and meetings that transpired here and to have an insight into the private life she led when she needed to get away from all of the rest of it. The Park Ranger gave a really excellent tour and afterward we wandered around the grounds of this beautiful peaceful spot and hated to leave it. I have a feeling that many who visit Hyde Park overlook this important site and it is really a don't miss!

You get a real feel for Eleanor Roosevelt here. The casual decor, her pride in her Hall/Livingston ancestry and her commitment to civil rights shine through

My mom and I stopped by Val Kill on our way home from the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to explore the grounds and the other properties around Hyde Park. I'm already considering a trip back at the same time next year to enjoy the beautiful folliage and see more of the area!

We took the guided tour of Val Kill, which ran a little over an hour. Our guide was absolutely wonderful - her passion for both Eleanor Roosevelt as well as the properties and history of the area was evident. She kept her group well engaged and entertained throughout the tour of the cottage, and by the time we left we almost felt as though we had been guests there ourselves. This attraction is not to be missed!
