This was my second visit to Vail Cottage. The first time we were with a large group and did not get to see the second floor. This time there were only 3 of us on the tour and we got to tour the entire house....including Eleanor Roosevelt's sleeping porch. If you are 62 you can get a pass for $10 that allows access to all National Historic Sites.

The house and grounds are very pretty. However I thought the best part of the historic site was the opportunity to learn more about Mrs. Roosevelt. The introductory film is excellent, one of the best I have every seen concerning Mrs. Roosevelt. The park ranger did a superb job of connecting Mrs Roosevelt to the house and her life style there.

I have been there several times already and each time I did the tour and enjoyed learning about the Roosevelts and american history. Our tourguide was a nice guy, spoke very clear englisch so it was easy to understand for my company who came from overseas. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours but was very rewarding. Too bad the library is closed right now for renovations. I was pleasantly surprised to see that kids to, I believe 15 years of age are not charged. Nice.

Eleanor Roosevelt was an extraordinary leader, humanist, and eloquent writer. A visit to her private homesite is a must. She exuded love for people, especially those in need. Before feminism became popular, she was a graciously outspoken leader who spread good will around the world for America.

It will probably never be known how much of what FDR accomplished was because of his wife Eleanor. She was a woman who had suffered much in her life and she was no beauty, but somehow she was as much a force to be reckoned with as her husband. She did it with grace and style in an age where only 25% of women worked outside of their homes and the vast majority of women were homemakers. She worked tirelessly to help the less fortunate and gain more rights for women and minorities. She even served in the United Nations and became the first chairperson of the preliminary United Nations Commission on Human Rights!

To see her little getaway from the world where she entertained and relaxed was very interesting. It's hard to believe that the National Park Service was offered this site originally after Eleanor died and refused it! Women have "come a long way baby" since then and Eleanor was certainly a pioneer.

I encourage anyone interested in history to take this little tour. You would think someone as important and with as much money as Eleanor had would have a great mansion, but she mostly had just a little space for her family and friends. Make sure you have a look at the little round table where JFK asked for Eleanor's endorsement.
