“See excess and the 'pull ' of money”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

Interesting seeing this alongside the Roosevelt House. Now, which family had the REAL power? The Vanderbilts had immense wealth, and then it was gone. The Roosevelts were old money and had far more real power - and used it for good.

The mansion was never a live-in house: it was all for hosting other hangers-on and family....trivial pursuits....tennis parties, walking.

Fabulous views of the Hudson from the grounds. It's well worth going to both here and the Roosevelt sites (don't miss Val-Kill, Ealeanor's own house) and having a bit of quiet rumination on the meaning of life!

“beautiful and so over the top”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

If one wants to see visual evidence that the Vanderbilts were corrupted by wealth, here it is. A house so opulent in every dimension as to be totally unnatural (compare it to FDR's home down the road, which is a place someone could actually live). Beautiful grounds and view of the Hudson.

“From the Gilded Age”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

This part time home of Frederick (grandson of Cornelius VB) and Louise Vanderbilt is a well preserved example of the opulence of a bygone era. Our guide was once again Shannon Butler, who guided us through Springwood. While she is an expert on FDR, she claims to just be learning about Frederick and Louise. She must be a fast learner as she did a great job again. The mansion has all of the furniture as it was lived in by the Vanderbilts. The views of the river are amazing. It is well worth one to two hours of your time in Hyde Park.

“must see attraction”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

absolutely incredible mansion and grounds. I've been to many mansions, including Vanderbilt in Newport Rhode Island, Centerport NY, Oakdale NY and others and this is right up there with the rest......... and these were their part time "cottages". WOW. You have to see the views from the overlook- just amazing.

“Fabulous!”

What a great house and an excellent tour. The guide was very knowledgable. The house itself quite spendid and the grounds were beautiful, especially on a fall day when the leaves were at their peak.
