“Do not miss this beautiful estate”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

We did not go into the mansion, but the grounds are beautiful and very well tended. There are long, scenic walking trails. And, there is a nice area right on the Hudson River. Take at least 1/2 day and go visit this site, free if you want to just enjoy the beautiful grounds!

We will definitely be back, and could hardly tear ourselves away from this great place. Thank you for allowing the public to enjoy its beauty.

“An insight into Nouveau Riche Society of the late nineteenth century.”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

This house was interesting, one of many owned by the Vanderbilts and used for entertaining only a little of the year. It's purpose was to impress visitors and it was furnished expensively but discordantly. It looked as if it had been furnished in one go by someone who usually buys books by the yard. The furnishings simply did not go together, but this in itself was interesting, and the new money which had bulit and furnished this house was a stark contrast to the old money which had furnished FDR's house down the road. Fascinating!

“A great guide brought it to life”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Usually it is hard to imagine how people lived like this but the guide did an excellent job of bringing the history of the family and the time period to life. What my daughter and I found interesting is that for a beautiful, opulent mansion it actually had a homey feel. If you enjoy history and visiting great houses of a previous decade it is a must see. Because of the time of year, I can't speak for the grounds but if they are anything like the house, they must be spectacular.

“Historic, Romantic, Beautiful”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Vanderbilt Mansion suits many different groups of people. We have been going there for years, over 20 now! The gardens in the Spring and Summer are spectacular! We go once a week even in Winter usually just to sit at the overlook to unwind after the week. They have a once a year plant and flower sale on Memorial Day weekend in May which they cultivate from the actual HISTORICAL (over 100 years old) plants from the property! We go every year to expand and specialize our home garden. It's an amazing place! And, it can be very romantic as my husband and I had our first kiss there years ago :)
