The history of the Farnsworth is well known. It has miniball marks on its exterior, the restaurant staff wear period clothes, and the interior is decorated with interesting Gettysburg items. That's the good news. Calling this a tavern is a stretch. The half dozen beers on tap of so so quality was woefully inadequate. And the entrees were less than what we hoped for. This place should be doing better.

Farnsworth House is an old building on Baltimore Street in downtown Gettysburg, not far from the battlefield entrance. The setting is interesting, with the staff dressed in period costumes to add to the 19th Century air. We were there on a rather cold night, so couldn't appreciate the outdoor garden, though it looks like an attractive lunch alternative on a warmer day.
Unfortunately, the food and service are average at best. They have trouble handling large groups - we were 11. While the crab cakes were good, the other dishes weren't (overcooked prime rib and fish, cold soup). The staff is young and eager, but very inexperienced. Finding and serving a bottle of wine was a 20-minute experience. It is also quite pricey, especially relative to the quality.

This past weekend my cousin and I stayed the weekend at the Farnsworth House Inn. The room we booked was the Sweeney Room, which was $150.00 and night and it was not what we expected. The picture on their web site makes this room look much bigger than it really is and the room had a very unpleasant odor. We were also never told that Free breakfast was included in our stay and ended up going elsewhere. The staff was also no where to be found and there was a chain across the steps the whole weekend barring us from looking around downstairs. For 150.00 a night I expected to be able to look around and explore some. Monday morning I spoke with a manager who really didn't seem to care about my complaints. This is def a place that we will avoid in the future.

It was a while since we were at the Fansworth House Tavern for dinner. The food was very good and the price was very reasonable. The only thing was the tables are a little close together and you almost bumped the people sitting along side of us. Other then that the meal was wonderful.

I enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere and the meatloaf was quite good (not tomato-sauce based as I make myself). Bread and apple butter excellent. Chocolate cake suffered a bit - feel it had been frozen and only recently defrosted but hey, it's chocolate!
