We looked over the menus and dressed in our touring casuals we ate in the tavern in the cellar. The French Onion Soup was EXCELLENT and the Fishhouse Punch was very good too! Reasonable, casual offerings in the cellar tavern. It was a weeknight and very busy. You might do better going a little later than the dinner hour as we waited 50 minutes but WELL worth the wait for the budgeting traveler.

Excellent food set in an authentic house. Built in 1776 and part of the underground railroad exhibit. Make reservations because it can get crowded at dinner time. Four adults had a variety of seafood, pasta with seafood, and steaks. All enjoyed their meal. Bread and salad also came with the meals.

The Dobbin House Tavern is a definite if you are in the Gettysburg area. The building is full of history and includes a museum and a curiosity shop in addition to the tavern. We had lunch there. The menu was quite diverse and the food was very good. The lunch was served downstairs in the basement which is all wood and stone and is lit by candlelight. I felt as if we went back in time. The servers wore period costumes. The dishes were replicas of the originals which were used by the Dobbin family years ago. The onion soup was delicious. The sandwiches were good but the apple pie for dessert was incredible. All the desserts are home made and I can only imagine how good all the other desserts were, but the apple pie was one of the best I have ever had. It was served hot with ice cream. Yum. You should not leave Gettysburg without visiting the Dobbin House even if it is just to visit the curiosity shop and the museum.

Planters Punch drink was excellent, but the salad was just lettuce with one tomato slice and the Crab Meat Ala Dobbin was disappointing. It has a lot a crab, but it did not appear to be Maryland blue crab, but rather a dry version of crab of a lower quality. Dinner rolls and bread would have been better if warmed, not cold. Only the white bread was warm.

Probably the best French onion soup I've ever had! Its dimly lit but has real charm. Bring your reading glasses as the print on the menu is pretty small and the lighting (or lack thereof) can be difficult. Cami is a great waitress!
