My husband is a civil war buff, and we only live a few hours away, so we have probably been to Gettysburg 20 or more times in the past 12 years. We usually spend at least one night and like to try different accommodations and different cuisines. We have stayed in AND eaten in most of the many establishments in this fine city. We have stayed at the Dobbin House previously and it was delightful. We have had their bed and breakfast version of breakfast which has been delicious. We have eaten it the downstairs tavern which is good and less expensive than the upstairs dining. NOW- the upstairs dining room has a very pleasant atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly and helpful without being overbearing. We dined in front of a beautiful fireplace on a winter night in large overstuffed chairs. The food was hot and fresh with fresh baked breads. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was excellent (call to reserve a fireplace front table) and the price was average for nice dining. We will return again.....

This food is always spectacular. They do a special New Year's eve dinner that is delightful. I can't say enough good things about the prime rib or roast duck. And, depending on where you request to be seated there's a piano player, strolling mid-19th century minstrels or harp entertainment. Such a treat all around!

From a historical prospective, part of the resturant is in a building that is still standing 150 years after the Civil War. The atmosphere is quaint and the wait staff is very friendly however the powerful dollar is what drives the tavern today. Trying to get a table normally requires 30 - 45 minute waits. Tables are crammed into what is a small area. Very close quarters means a lot of noise and no space to be comfortable. Trying to read the menu is also very challenging do to the primary light source being candles on the tables. Also, the menus are worn out/tattered and appear to be printed on a inexpensive printer. The food is average considering the number of customers they serve. We were looking forward to the renowned "french onion soup". It was good but would have been better if less bread was stuffed under the cheese. The open face Ruben I ordered was pretty much dried out by the time it was brought to the table. French fries were good. Beer is served in small mugs for the cost of a normal 6 pack. Given the smallness of the room and the lack of space between the tables, having small children with you is very taxing and can be a distraction to other guests.
If going to the resturant, the best times are very early lunch or very late lunch. Same holds for dinner.
