“LOVELY...”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

While visiting Gettysburg we dined in the Tavern for lunch and the Dining Room for dinner. The decor strives to be tasteful and in keeping with the home's "colonial" character, without being tacky. Each dining experience was unique and memorable. The service was professional and pleasant. The food was very well prepared and presented. We had an excellect experience on both occasions.

“RESERVATIONS!”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

The pub food is good, but it is crowded and dark. You won't get into the restaurant without a reservation... too much of a tourist trap. If the line is long, try some of the other inns in town. The food is as good or better...

“Great Historical Site”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

The tavern is located in a lower level, has a spring flowing thru it that was once used to cool drinks.

The bar itself is a 1700's bar relocated form another area bar, that is long gone.

Viewable by request is a secret area that was used as part of the "Underground Rail Road" for escaping slaves from the South on their way to freedom in the north.

“Go for the Atmosphere”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Built in 1776, you can't beat the historic atmosphere of this tavern. We ate by candlelight in the very cozy basement. We honestly felt transported back a few centuries – the atmosphere was lively and people at nearby tables talked to one another (probably due to the very close proximity of the tables). Food was just OK (I had crab cakes), but the atmosphere was definitely worth the effort. This building also served as a “station” on the famous “Underground Railroad”.
Be prepared for a very loud, crowded setting, with basic food. I'm rating it high for the location experience not the dining. Casual meals are the norm; there is a more formal restaurant in another part of the building.

“a "1776" classic old fashioned tavern”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

The food was very good, service excellent, and historically accurate. A bit crowded, definitely need reservations otherwise the wait on any night is very long.
