No first time trip to Gettysburg is complete without starting at the Museum and Visitor Center. The museum is self-paced tour of the battle from the start to the end. There will definitely something new to learn about the battle that you did not know prior to your visit. Additionally, the Cyclorama is a masterful piece of artwork that put the enormity of the battlefield into perspective. I recommend seeing this first before heading out to tour the various areas of the battlefield.

This was our first trip to Gettysburg and we will definitely be back again.

As a resident of Arlington Virginia I am very familiar with museums in the National Capital Area. I have to say that the GNMP Museum and Visitors Center is on par or even superior to the best of them. This is an interactive facility that not only teaches visitors about the historical drama of the battle of Gettysburg and the social issues that both preceded and followed, but it makes you feel and care about those events. The new center (10 years old) is a masterpiece that should not be missed. I’ve seen the historical film and the incredible cyclorama four times now, and would go back again and again just to reflect on what freedom, liberty, and democracy is all about, and how close we came to losing it.

Going to the visitor center and taking advantage of the film and museum will help you understand how terrifying the war was. Gave you details that you didn't learn in school
