I advise you see the movie and the cyclorama prior to visiting the battlefield. The museum proper can be visited either before or after the battlefields--if you return the same day. This is one heckuva museum.

It captures the moment and tells the story in a very unique way. I recommend making time to this if you are visiting the area.

My husband and I were blown away by the new visitors center and museum. The rangers at the desk were very friendly and able to answer questions that we had about specific memorials and their locations. We bought the package that included the museum, movie, cyclorama and bus tour. We spent over three hours in the museum and still did not see it all. The cyclorama is unlike anything I had ever seen before, a beautiful representation of the three days of the battle. Our bus tour guide was great and really gave us a good overview of the battlefield that gave us confidence to go explore on our own. Everything about the new visitors center is first-rate. Don't miss it!

We visited the museum and the Cylorama prior to driving around the park with a private guide. The tour bus for 2 was only $5 less than a 2 hr guided tour. We took a 3 hr version which was worth the price. The things you learn you would never on your own. The Museum and Cyclorama were an additional $11 but it too was worth the cost.

I came to Gettysburg before this monstrosity was built about 5 years ago. Then, the cyclorama was free, as was the museum when it was located across from the National Cemetery. Gift shop prices are ridiculous. Support the shops downtown when buying your souvenirs. They have a better selection and much better prices ($15 t shirts instead of $35 t shirts).

The little souvenir shops downtown are what help to give Gettysburg that quaintness. All the shop owners in the little shops are very friendly and 9/10 you end of having wonderful conversations with them and learning new things about Gettysburg.
