A must see for everyone visiting Gettysburg. I've been to this cemetery for memorial purposes and it can be very moving. I don't know if they still do, but they used to have a ceremony with luminaries for each death. It took my breath away.

President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address here as part of the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery. Lincoln was not the featured speaker but ironically hardly anyone remembers the other guy (Edward Everett) who spoke for two hours after Lincoln delivered his enduring three minute address. Today the cemetery remains a solemn place to remember the many heroes that sacrificed and fell during the horrific battle to preserve the union. The cemetery is located across the road from the old visitors center where one can park to see the understated memorial to Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address and one large monument in the center – the focus is on those that fell.

A visit to the first national cemetery, resting place for thousands of our heroes and the scene of Licoln's Gettysburg Address, is a must if you are in the area.
Take an hour or less to walk through this hallowed ground and get a sense of the sacrifice and history that surrounds this place.

Beautiful area. I great place to go and reflect on what took place in July 1863. You look at all the grave markers and think about each of these men giving their life for what they believed in and see how many markers there on...you are awed.

This is where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Plus it's worth checking out the monuments and getting a feel for what went on there.
