Owner description: The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

Before goting to Gettysburg I did research and saw movies related to the Civil Way and Gettysburg but its not until you get to the sites where it happened and hear the story through a knowledgeable and talented guide. The US Park Service has plenty of free programs and resources at this site. We heard about the Gettysburg address, how the stones are lined up, details about the monuments and headstones and much more.

Plan to spend several days in this historical place. There is so much to see and do for all ages. The new visitor's center is a great place to start your adventure. The Cyclorama and Eisenhower Farm are well worth seeing. Take time to drive, bike or hike around the battle field. There are plenty of places to stop and pull over. The ranger tours are excellent and very informative. I learn something new here every time I visit. It'a a fascinating place.

The visitor's center & park at Gettysburg is a must, even if you are not a history nut like me. My daughter is not a fan of history and even she was excited by the exhibits in the museum and by the battlefield itself. Give yourself a whole day to explore the museum and battlefield. The museum, movie, and cyclorama will take at least 3 hours to explore...longer if you look at every exhibit they have there. We did the self guided tour of the battlefield. The park service says it should take 3hrs, it took us 4hrs and we could have gone longer...so much to see! They offer us tours and tour guides that ride n your car with you, but if you want to save some cash, grab the free auto tour map in the lobby at the visitors center and drive yourself. Each stop has info about what happened there so you can follow the progression of the battle. The auto tour is well marked and you can also stop at extra places along the way.

We tool the guided tour and the guide drives your vehicle and explains the 3 days of the battle and troop movements.

That is the best way to tour this wonderful piece of Gettysburg history.

We started at the National Cemetery and were able to have a ranger-led tour. Very well done. The Visitor Center itself, while impressive, was disappointing because there's very little to view unless you pay to view it. If we hadn't done the Seminary Ridge Museum earlier, we might have invested in this one.
We did part of the auto tour, which was OK, using the Park brochure.
