Owner description: The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

The venue is super easy to find, and full of Civil War information. The national park people there are helpful in pointing out interesting area information, as well as Civil War facts.

I can’t believe we had not made it to this national park before now – every American should visit. Because we were on a very tight schedule, we arranged a private 3-hour tour – they drive you in your own car and the price (about $85) was well worth it. We had a very customized and focused tour. There are many other less expensive options for seeing the park. It is much larger than we anticipated, so you need to be sure to allow ample time. I think having a guide of some sort enhances the experience.
A stay in the nearby town of Gettysburg really helps bring in all into focus.

The effort put into ACW battlefields can be varied, but as arguably the most iconic site of the war, Gettysburg battlefield has got it right. It can be extremely busy, it is popular as a coach destination and when we were there (over a weekend), there were lots of scout groups too. The new visitor centre is very modern, has all necessary facilities (food outlet, book shop etc), information is easy to obtain with plenty of willing volunteers. The orientation movie is average, but the cyclorama is worth the entrance price alone. It is simply stunning.
If you visit the site by car, don't be tempted to use the bus tours of the site or drive 20 or so key points of the battlefield yourself. Book a park ranger to drive you around the site, it is only $5 more than using the bus (for two). That way you'll get the maximum out of the tour and have the ranger to yourself. The museum is OK, I've seen better, but is it designed to cater for all levels of interest in the civil war. Parking can be tricky at times and all the car parks look exactly the same, so make sure you remember where you parked!
Tips to make sure you get the most from it:
Book your ranger ahead of time - if you try and book on the day, you might be disappointed or have to wait until the afternoon.
Set aside some time to revisit some of the key points of interest after the tour, you won't have a lot of time at any one point.
Don't be tempted to drive the site yourself, the order of the drive is geographical not chronological so you might get a bit confused about the 3 day battle
Pay to see the movie, cyclorama and museum first before you venture out onto the battlefield. You will see things in perspective.
Try and organise a tour early in the day, but lunchtime it is really busy.

I've toured several Civil War battlefields and Gettysburg is by far the finest. It can be easily understood and one can readily visualize exactly how the battle developed and progressed. The landscape has been preserved to reflect the conditions as they existed in 1863. It can be toured in one day, or you can choose to spend months getting to know it. A licensed battlefield guide is strongly recommended for first time visitors. You can tour by car, horseback, foot, or even Segway. I rode my bike around the grounds for 3 days and really got a good perspective. For anyone who appreciates history and especially for anyone who has an interest in the Civil War, Gettysburg is a must.
