“2000+ acre hidden gem”
Reviewed November 14, 2011

Although the area covered by the reservation is large, places like the hemlock falls and the white pine grove are still not much visited. You will be able to enjoy these in a relative solitude.

“lovely place to hike within 45 minutes of New York City”
Reviewed February 17, 2008

We have found the South Mountain Reservation in Milburn to be a lovely place for light hiking/country walking. It's very close to the city - It takes us 30 - 45 minutes from Brooklyn. It's a straight shot through Staten Island (or from Manhattan take the Holland Tunnel); drive west on 78. Take the Milburn Main Street exit (route 527), Drive north to Brookside Drive, then follow signs.

There is a New Jersey Transit train stop a block from the entrance.

Once you are into the park, there is an uphill climb along some lovely terrain. Once at the top, we go left along the mountain top. At that point you can walk on an asphalt path or along a path in the woods. It's very pretty at all times of the year. We tend to prefer the winter for the quiet.

Once you have done your country walking, there are some engaging things to do in the area. The Milburn public library which is 1/2 block from the base of the entrance is accomodating to visitors.. We have always liked to fuel up before the park with turkey burgers at the Milburn Diner, which is two blocks from the entrance. The main street of the town has some lovely shops to peruse. The reservation is a few minutes drive from the Mall at Short Hills.

We have also come here for a short visit before going to concerts at the arts center in Newark.
