Echo the great location - and the neighborhood has become more vibrant with new restaurants, tapas, and wine bars opening around the corner on 13th St. Stayed here when it was a HI, and again after it became an HIX. This was the best stay even though the hotel was very busy. Had an end room which was quiet and enjoyed the breakfast. Staff kept the items refilled even when the small breakfast room was busy. The pool was still open after Labor Day and rooms were clean and comfortable. Wireless internet worked well - biggest complaint was the television reception. Cable was low resolution and some channels had audible hum/static.

You get what you pay for....and then some!

I've stayed here before, and the location can't be beat: a five-minute walk to the Reading Terminal Market, City Hall, Broad Street theatres, and several SEPTA lines. You're a slightly longer walk--but manageable--to Indepence Hall and the original colonial city sights and close to lots of neat restaurants up and down Walnut Street.

We were lucky enough to stay in what appeared to be a refurbished room, with LOTS of space and new beds and pillows. The room was fairly well lit and very comfortable. There's a pretty decent breakfast included. If you're not fussy or gourmet, there's pancakes, eggs, bagels and biscuits and lots of coffee and juices.

Not so great was the crowded lobby and the length of time it took to check in. Also, be aware that even though there's a parking garage attached to the hotel, it costs $25 a day to park your car.

However, given its prime location and decent price, this is an outstanding bargain in the City of Brotherly Love!

Room Tip: Try for a refurbished room---I've seen lots of complaints here about out-of-date and grubby rooms.

I picked this hotel for a group of us to stay at while working at a trade show at the convention center.

Pros:
+ Location - 10 minute walk to the convention center, short walk to tourist/historical attractions, and many good restaurants within one to a few blocks.
+ Cost - The nightly rate was reasonable, and there are no mini bars or lounge on the property, so you don't end up seeing incidental charges on peoples' expense reports. The Walnut Street Supper Club is a block away and has a lounge.
+ Friendly staff - Everyone was great, although one of the front desk staff was a bit smug.

Cons:
- No in room safe. I didn't have any problems, but...
- Parking - Expensive at $25 per day, but then again parking is expensive throughout the city. Also, all cars get double parked so you really need to plan ahead and talk to the attendants if you need to get out of the garage quickly or very early in the AM to catch a flight.
- The breakfast buffet isn't anything to brag about, but that's typical for Holiday Inn Expresses. At least there are restaurants nearby.
- The place is in need of renovation. Everything looks old.
- Thin walls. The person in the room next to mine set their alarm clock with the volume cranked up and proceeded to hit their sleep switch three times. It was loud enough to wake me in the next room.
- No on-site fitness facility. They give you passes to Bally's ~2 blocks away. Probably not too fun in the winter or on rainy days.

The location was adequate for the Made in America event, but that's about the nicest thing I can say. The furniture is outdated, our floor smelled heavily of cigarette smoke despite being "non smoking" and the customer service was below average. The maids were the friendliest employees there, and 2 of 3 front desk staff that we worked with were rude, at best. Not worth the price.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

We chose this hotel because it was in relatively easy walking distance to the Convention Center. We had also read about the various historic sites within walking distance, and the easy subway access to the Phillies stadium.

All of this easy access stuff turned out to be completely true! While we choose to walk to the historic area of the city and this walk was non-trivial, it was doable if you're used to walking. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell were not quite as far, but still a decent walk. The convention center was a very easy walk. And the venture to the subway station turned out to be super easy. We figured out the subway, enjoyed a Phillies game and were back at the hotel via return subway ride quickly and easily.

We were on one of the higher level floors of the hotel, but the elevators were prompt and fast. The room was very nice; clean, comfortable, quiet with a good view of the city ... from our room at least. Housekeeping did an excellent job.

We did not eat at the complimentary HIX breakfasts here. I used to love these breakfast freebies, and in reality I guess I still do. However, we stay at HIX's often and everyone needs a break from the same stuff, eh? Fortunately, there was an IHOP right across the street that had great food and even better service. Excellent!

There was one minor down-side with staying in this downtown hotel. Even though we didn't need a car to get around, we still brought one with us to get there and back. Parking was $25 a day and valet style, where you had to leave your keys with them. However, dropping off the car, then picking it up when we were ready to leave proved easy and fast. So, short of the $75 extra cost (and we knew about this ahead of time, so no biggy), it was convenient and painless.
