I don't know how we had missed Core de Roma up to now. Great Italian places tend to be in South Philly as opposed to on South Street, so we weren't sure what we'd find, but what we did was excellent true Roman cuisine in a small, hopping room. The cocktails were great, the hot fresh-baked bread was even better, and the menu had so many wonderful options that it was really difficult to decide. I loved the complimentary plate of white beans that kept us from starvation as we struggled over what to order. We loved everything we ordered: the stuffed artichokes (not on the printed menu), pasta al pomodoro, mussels, vitello core de Roma, and veal parmigiana (also not on the menu but they were happy to make it). Service was great even though the place was packed, and the bill was almost embarrassingly low. The only thing keeping Core from being five stars is the plain, almost Spartan décor, but regardless of ambience, we hope to return soon!
