We walked by this little establishment several times during our stay in Philadelphia and decided to try it out as the dishes being eaten by those dining outside looked pretty good. Only when we began to order and the waiter asked us if we brought our own bottle, did we realize there was no alcohol served at Mercato. It was a little disappointing since we do like a glass of good wine or a mixed drink with dinner. But then, when another couple sat down nearby and asked the waiter where the closest ATM was, we realized what else we had overlooked, the cash only reference. Luckily, we had just enough to cover our meal. Being from California where credit card is king and almost every restaurant except fast food joints have a wine/drink list, this was a whole new restaurant experience for us. It didn't take away from the good food. But I'm not sure as tourists, we would go back carrying a bottle of wine and enough cash to make it through dinner.

My wife and I made reservations after a discerning friend highly recommended Mercato. He was right, the food and service was terrific. We shared the anti pasta. My wife had the grilled Caesar and I had the market salad. Both were great. Then she has the rigatoni with pork shoulder and I had the pasta paramount. They were 2 of the best pasta dishes we ever had. Fresh and flavorful. We ended with the chocolate molten cake, another winner.
Service was spot on all night. They we all warm and friendly.
Mercato is also BYOB which we like because we know we will like the wine we are drinking.
Be aware the place is small and you will get to know your neighbors. Also, it is cash only.
We will definitely return, soon.

Went with a group to Mercato, and managed to get a table, which was a success on its own. It is a BYO and cash only, so be prepared. The food is exceptional. Folks at the table tried the entire spectrum of the menu, and no one was disappointed.

What a culinary experience! Yes, it's loud and somewhat tight quarters, but the service is adequate and the food, divine! We had the pyramid pasta with crab and shrimp as well as the antipasto for two (fabulous) and the Mediterranean sea bass which was wonderful. This was a meal we will long remember. When was the last time you could say that. We'll be back.
