A visit to the James Turrell Sky Space at the Chestnut Hill Meeting House was a highlight of a recent trip. I visited at dusk to spend 50 minutes watching the sky and accompanying light display in the domed meeting room. Turrell's lighting contrasted and complimented the darkening sky; many moods from contemplative to excitable were experienced. Bring a mat to lie on the floor; check the schedule for days and start times and to register in advance (required). I'm looking forward to seeing the dawn display next visit.

This is a unique & special experience. An extraordinary way to contemplate the magic of the sky and light. Once seen, the conversations and wonder continue.

Friends connected with this Quaker Meeting House invited us to experience this sculpture/installation - not quite sure what to call it. This is one of the hidden treasures in Philadelphia - the only time I've ever experienced what I can only call "unforced serenity." 50 minutes of silence, except for an occasional car passing by or a bird calling- no New Age music or yogic commentary - the shifting light patterns of the installation do it all for you. A must!

I have visited the still-new Chestnut Hill Meeting, many years in the planning by the Quaker group that gathers there on Mermaid Lane each week, and was very impressed with both the building and the amazing "light show" produced several times a week by a combination of interior ceiling lighting and the space in the ceiling center that opens to the heavens. I say "heavens" because it seems to open further than to the air or to the sky: it seems to reach somewhere ethereal and magical, and the show holds us in its silence in this special place for long enough for a kind of shared peace to emerge that is hard to describe and impossible to quantify. The color contrasts that fool the eye without high-tech gadgets or video are soothing and transforming, and I highly recommend a visit to experience this.

Contemplation in the meeting room of the Chestnut Hill Meetinghouse during an opening of Skyspace is a very unusual experience and difficult to describe. It allows one to experience the silence of a meeting for worship for an hour, and be inspired by the artist's framing of the sky with brilliant colors. The colors are influenced by the amount of light in the sky. Go see!
