The homemade ice cream is amazing, and so is sitting outside on the sidewalk, taking in the lovely sights of Philadelphia.

Visited the Franklin Fountain on a cold evening in January of 2013 with my Philadelphia-native friends. The winter menu is in full-effect at this time, so I decided to get a "hot shake" - the flavor I got was peanut butter brownie. What this means, basically, is a hot brownie with hot peanut butter swirls mixed into cold ice cream and blended. The effect is warming and chilly at the same time. And it's DELICIOUS. Who doesn't love hot brownie with cold ice cream? I also loved that the straws are the old-fashioned wax paper kind, sturdy and big enough to let brownie chunks through (they give you a spoon just in case, though). Be forewarned, have cash - they do not accept cards. Also, look for the old-fashioned sodas and candy in the back. I found Moxie and Sen-Sen candy on the shelves. Just an all-around great place to treat yourself after an evening in the city.

We don't live in Philly but when we have dinner in Old City we like to have dessert at the Franklin Fountain. Love the many ice cream choices and friendly service. Prices are a little high but worth it for a treat.

Saw this on the show Man vs. Food and decided to give it a try. It's a tourist pit-stop for certain. No parking in the area. The ice cream was nothing special and did if it's actually 'homemade' I would be surprised. The customer service was so-so. It was also crowded and disorganized the day I visited. In the summer months you can sit outside and thats the only perk I see to paying for mediocre ice cream. If your into gimmicky ambiance this place is for you.

This was one of my favorite quick stops while visiting Philadelphia. On top of having amazing ice cream, drinks, and other assorted soda fountain items, the old timey atmosphere was fantastic. The people working there were nice and great explaining some of the choices. A place I would visit again any time I was in Philadelphia.
