Description: THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE! In the summer of 1976, my father and a business partner opened Jim's Steaks South St., Bringing a unique art-deco storefront and an even more distinctive cheesesteak to a neighborhood in the midst of a renaissance. Few would have predicted that over the course of nearly four decades the shop would become one of the most celebrated restaurants in Philadelphia. You'll find us on what's known as the "Hippest Street in Town," serving up the finest cheesesteaks and hoagies from the heart of the city that made them famous. Five-time winner of Philadelphia Magazine's "Best of Philly" award and Zagat rated, Jim's is your 'must-have' cheesesteak when only the BEST will do. With well over 200 years of cheesesteak-making knowhow, our staff will make you glad you stopped in each and every time you visit. Whether you're a Philly native or a conventioneer, touring the city's incredible history and museums or just passing through, you'll know you're getting the real Philly cheesesteak experience when you walk through our door. Ask anyone who has tasted our sandwiches! We can't wait to show you how it's done. Our best, Ken Silver Second Generation Proprietor Jim's Steaks South St.

Skip Pat's and Geno's. They're fine for tourists, but for a great cheesesteak come to Jim's. Yeah, Cheese Whiz is an inedible abomination -- except on a cheesesteak, where it combines magically with the meat (I get mine with "extra Whiz" and I'm never disappointed). My recommendation? "Extra Whiz, wit' " and ask for a cup of the free peppers when you pay. Going on a Friday or Saturday night? Get in line and expect to wait. Seating upstairs is almost always available.

We always take visiting friends and relatives to Jim's for authentic Philly cheesesteaks. Don't be discouraged by the line. It moves quick and the food is well worth the wait. When we took my teenage nephew, who complained the whole time about waiting in line for food when we were already starving, he begged to get right back in line for another one and couldn't believe that there weren't Jim's one every corner of every city on the US. As an added bonus it's only a short walk from in Independence Halls and the Liberty Bell.

Cheesesteaks are personal in Philly. And customers remain fiercely loyal to one the top three, of which Jim's is one. The service here is do-it-yourself and it definitely has atmosphere--just not a place to linger. (People are waiting for your seat!)
It's a place where you often stand in line for a while just to place your order. There are stools on the ground floor, but if your party is more than one, go the back to go upstairs (past the meat slicer and refrigerators), where most of the seating is.
Tips: 1) Know what you want before you get to the head of the line--there is little patience for indecision! 2) Lines are really long over holidays.

Jim's Steak's is not your typical sandwhich place. The meat is fresh cut and steaks are made to order. There is a reason this place has long lines. If you're in a rush, try not to go there in the weekends. Price is not bad for steaks that are good. Has additional seating on the second floor. The place hasn't changed much since the 80s and I love it.
