Description: Once called "the most genteel tavern in America" by John Adams and the first unofficial "White House," Chef Walter Staib's City Tavern has boasted the finest celebrations since 1773. With over 230 years of hospitality, City Tavern has been the centerpiece of affairs now immortalized in history. An evening at City Tavern is certain to be remembered. Just imagine sampling specialties, such as pepperpot soup, colonial turkey pot pie, roast duckling, Thomas Jefferson's sweet potato biscuits paired with ales the ales of the revolution made from George Washington & Benjamin Franklin's recipes -- all served by costumed wait staff. Watch an episode of A Taste of History on PBS, our Chef Proprietor Walter Staib will give you glimpse of what we do here at City Tavern.

Great setting. Near independence hall but looks like from that time. They even have beers brewed from recipes from the presidents. Food recipes from that time too

They give you so much food- we had leftovers-yay! Service was alright, our waiter could have smiled more/been more friendly. The mushroom toast appetizer was huge and very interesting. My 2 crab cakes as an app could have been an entree. The desserts were delicious and I loved the old house the restaurant is situated in- Thomas Jefferson ate here and apparently met Paul Revere here. The employees dress up colonial style. I think it was a great value for restaurant week but normally I would never pay $36 for veal. I got a seafood pasta that was pretty good. You start off with bread. Good mood lighting. We were surprised the restaurant wasn't busier!

The City Tavern is a required dining experience for anyone wanting to truly immerse themself in Philadelphia’s majestic colonial history.
The meals are very good and the period drinks such as shrub a required embellishment. The staff are cordial and the overall atmosphere enthralling.
I recommend reserving a table in the smaller rooms although if you end up in the larger room upstairs, meditate on the fact that America’s forefathers gathered there to craft our future

I visited City Tavern on 1/11/2020. The meal was absolutely amazing and the service was out of this world. Greg made the evening spectacular. I highly recommend this slice of American history.

Our selections: egg nog, Chardonnay, basil shrimp, corn chowder, salmon, duck, chocolate mousse cake, crème brûlée.

Everything was fantastic. Our server, Greg, was so lovely. My birthday dinner was delicious and fun.
