Description: Once called "the most genteel tavern in America" by John Adams and the first unofficial "White House," Chef Walter Staib's City Tavern has boasted the finest celebrations since 1773. With over 230 years of hospitality, City Tavern has been the centerpiece of affairs now immortalized in history. An evening at City Tavern is certain to be remembered. Just imagine sampling specialties, such as pepperpot soup, colonial turkey pot pie, roast duckling, Thomas Jefferson's sweet potato biscuits paired with ales the ales of the revolution made from George Washington & Benjamin Franklin's recipes -- all served by costumed wait staff. Watch an episode of A Taste of History on PBS, our Chef Proprietor Walter Staib will give you glimpse of what we do here at City Tavern.

“Early American environment with the most excellent experience”

Last night, my wife and I were celebrating out 44th wedding anniversary by having dinner at the City Tavern. I can only say that it was our most pleasant dinning experience. The food and the ale were excellent. But what really made the night so memorable was the service, especially our server, Joan. She is everything you would expect and more. She was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. She truly made our 44th anniversary dinner the best of all 44.

“A Lovely Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2014

I booked a reservation here after reading the favorable reviews here. (You can book a reservation on their website.) We were very pleased with our experience. We had our toddler with us and the staff was very good with her.

We started with the flight of beers based on colonial recipes. We are not beer drinkers really, but it was a fun and unique experience. (We both like George Washington's the best.) The bread was really good, as was our food. I had the chicken, which I shared with my daughter, and my husband had the beef medallions. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. The atmosphere was very nice. It was reminiscent of the taverns we visited in Colonial Williamsburg when I was a kid.

It wasn't a cheap meal, but we felt it was a fair value for the price considering the location (minutes away from Independence Hall), atmosphere and quality of the food. If you're looking for a special meal in a different kind of atmosphere, I definitely recommend City Tavern.

“Visit but don't order...”

By all means, go there and see the historic landmark the City Tavern is, but don't eat there. Very mediocre, overpriced food.

We certainly hope you had the opportunity to discuss your dissatisfaction of your meal with a manager on premise so we could remedy the problem. Chef Staib and his entire team takes pride in serving the most authentic 18th century cuisine.

Our dinners were very good and the service was excellent. The prices were as expected for a tourist attraction, but we were happy with our experience.

“The Unexpected Dinner.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

I have to say we were questioning the decision to book a large party at the City Tavern. We expected a tourist trap with mediocre food. What we got was anything but.

The atmosphere was charming, the service good, our hostess fantastic.

Food was very good. The appetizers, soup, our main course, desert was all very nicely prepared and served.

A bonus were the beers on draft.

Really who could ask for anything more?

Well maybe a dining companion to share it intimately rather than with a group of 28.

I will return.
