“Good Prix Fixe Evening”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013 via mobile

Came here the evening before the Philadelphia Marathon with family. Great multi-course (including wine & lemon cello) experience with excellent pasta selections and perfected prepared main courses.
Plan to come hungry...it's generous portions. The atmosphere is comfortable in that South Philly way ... Like going to "Mama's" on a Sunday afternoon. Great place for groups. Service is excellent and there's absolutely no rush. Linger over the bottle of Ameretto or limoncello that is left on the table .

“Most authentic multi-course Italian experience in Philly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

Just had a business dinner with four associates at Mamma Maria in Philly's "little Italy". Wow! What an authentic experience! As we got comfortable, a bread basket and carafe of red house wine for the table. First the antepasta, followed by soup (presented as vegetable soup, but easily recognized as pasta fagiolio (sp?)). The soup was followed by a pasta plate for each person comprised of gnochi, rigatoni, and ziti, each in a unique sauce. Amazing! Then came a light, simple, leafy salad along with the individual entrees. Two of us had the flounder with crab, two had the veal parm. What an overwhelming sensory delight!!! Dinner was followed with a sampling of Italian liquers (sp?) then deserts, left at the table for us to divide as we chose. This entire experience, with tip, about $250 for four men. ...and worth EVERY dollar! I highly recommend Mamma Maria when you are in the area!

“Avoid this place-too many better options in Soth Philly”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

Should have gotten the hint by seeing that this place was almost empty on a week end. They do not have a very deep menu and their $55 fixed price dinner is a real rip off. Portions are small, the food is just blah!!, and the kitchen seems to love to overcook and over salt everything. The wine that is included must cost $3 a gallon and the serve staff does not seem to know that the communal dishes they serve will require both flat ware and plates upon which to eat it. No item on the seven course dinner was really of any quality. Their antipasto platter seemed to be made up of items from Costco. They serve a soup that is such a small portion that you really can't get a spoon around it because it is such a shallow serving. I guess that this is OK because the soup is so bland and the veggies overcooked that you are better off not having too much of it. Also, don't believe the on line menu, they roll it back. The desert cakes are mainly a variation of the same cake and come served piled onto a plate to be shared by the table.
As I said above-- don't risk it. If you only have a couple of days in Philly, find a better restaurant.
With so many real Italian restaurants in Philly offering really great food for more reasonable prices, you have no reason to visit mama maria's

“Authentic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2013

I went with a group and was greeted by Mamma. It are several courses and there is alcohol throughout the meal. It was about $73 per person including the tip and there were 7 of us. The trio pasta dish was fabulous and homemade. The chicken soup with the crepes is to die for. Every dish is just enough and there is plenty of bread and veggies to feed you if are a big eater. The wine was wonderful. Be sure to save room for dessert...the cake was to die for. Don't worry they have an assortment including chocolate, and strawberry short cake. A great meal. The wait staff was terrific and attentive.

“the mysterious check”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Ever get a check with words you can't understand? How about no prices next to any of the orders? How about $270 bill for Three People. Bring an accountant and a lawyer to this place if not the cops.
