We wanted to visit 9th Street and Ralph's after reading about them in the book, "America's Little Italys" by Sheryll Bellman. We arrived at a little after noon and my husband had the mussels in white wine appetizer. I had the greens and pastina soup. They were delicious and the msussels were enough for a meal. For our entrees, my husband had the sausage and peppers with a side of spaghetti and I had the veal with peppers & mushrooms with spaghetti. We brought the leftovers home for dinner. We finished our meals off with a coffee and an espresso. We plan to return with friends over the winter. It was definately worth the 120 mile drive! Keep in mind that we were there at lunch time, so it did not have the ambiance that it would have during the dinner hours.

Ralph's is a bit of an institution. They do a big business serving old style italian red-sauce food in ample portions at a middle price range. They serve Sarcone's bread (ask for it, it is worth asking for). As far as taste goes, though, it is pretty standard stuff, and there are better places in town for this kind of food, as well as many more interesting newer takes on Italian food.

The last time we went, it was just the wife and myself, on a visit to South Philly, and they did not take Credit cards, that was years ago. This time it was the two of us, with two daughters and one 12 yr old grandson. We stopped there on a whim, after a visit to the Franklin Institute. On a week day, around 7:30,
we were able to get right in without a reservation with only about a 5 minute wait. We knew it would crowded, with the tables right on top of each other, but we also knew that the food was great. We were not disappointed. The Eggplant Rottella, Spinach Gnocci, Clams Casino, Mussels, Fettuccini Alfredo, and Manicotti were all rated as excellant by those that had it. The owner even came up and asked how we were doing and if we enjoyed our meals. We did. It was not cheap, but in line with other up scale restaurants. Well worth the trip.

Ralph's has been around for over 100 years, and there's a good reason for that! They serve great classic Italian food. I LOVE their Chicken Parm, and hubs goes for the lasagne. Service is great, food comes out fast and they take good care of you with your doggie bags (extra sauce and bread!). Even if you aren't a South Philly Italian, they make you feel like part of the family!

A day trip with our kids started at the Camden Aquarium, and moved over to the Italian Market. By the time dinner rolled around, we really didn't have a plan, but after checking tripadvisor and open table, we decided to give Ralph's a shot. It didn't disappoint.
It's so hard to recommend Italian food-almost everyone has their own favorite sauce ( or gravy, to some...) or pasta, or meatballs. All we can say is that everything we had at our table of 6 was delicious, with 3 different main orders of pasta and 3 different meat entrees to sample. Even our au pair, who had just joined our family from Italy, called the sauce 'gorgeous.' We enjoyed the old-fashioned atmosphere and decor (it part of the charm of being the country's oldest Italian restaurant, isn't it?) and the service couldn't have been more pleasant or efficient. But it should be noted that we were there on the earlier side of dinner time, so the dining area was nearly empty when we arrived. I'm guessing it can get rather crowded and hectic when the dining room is full.
