Service was GREAT, food was even BETTER! I had gnocchi , family members had chicken parm. Portions were so large we brought half home for the next day. I forgot to mention we started with muscles in red gravy. They were FANTASTIC! The only complaint is that the tables are so close together you can't have a private conversation.

According to the menu, Ralph's, located at the Italian Market, is the oldest family owned restaurant in the US & with its dim lighting, colorful authentic Italian tiles, faded flowered wallpaper, wooden chairs & tables, topped with snowy white cloths; old photos & cordial waiters, dressed in black, it looks & feels the part. Altho I preferred the opera music playing when we first entered, in this atmosphere, even Frank Sinatra worked for me.

The menu is traditional & reasonable but OMG: The perfectly hot egg/mozzarella/pepper sandwich - on fresh crusty bread from nearby Sarcone's bakery - that I recently had for lunch was superb & so generous that half was left over for breakfast the next day, which was buona fortuna for me!

At the end of the Italian Market ,next to one of the best bakerys in south philly , you got to stop at Ralphs for either lunch or dinner. They will bring you a basket of real fresh south philly bread (italian of course) and from there it only gets better. Family owned and run for years their reputation for great meals at reasonable prices makes you say "i should make my special occasion reservations now for next time". Veal and Chicken dishes you cut with your fork ,so tender and delicious. The menu is not overwelming but hard to decide . Service always great, these guys and ladies are on the ball and happy to see you. This is a true South Philly Gem.

We found Ralph's on Tripadvisor, and went for dinner on a Wednesday night without a reservation. We were seated within a few minutes upstairs. The decor was tacky Italian, which added to the charm. It appeared to be a family business. The service was attentive, but not annoying. The food was plentiful and authentic. We really enjoyed it, and recommend it for either a romantic evening or a family dinner.

We had just a delightful dinner here. The food was excellent, the wine flowed, and even our waitress was a treasure. Definately our our list to return to. Food is old world Italian. Atmosphere was casual to romantic. Prices, quite reasonable. Maybe not as fancy as some, but we loved it.
