“Fabulous, unpretentious Greek food”
Reviewed May 8, 2012

I try to never miss this place when in Philadelphia. Plenty of delicious appetizers (Greek salad, feta and olives, beets, cucumber tzatziki, octopus) and main dishes (lamb, fried calamari, soft-shell crabs). A basic selection of wine including a Greek red and white and a retsina. Don't under any circumstances miss the chocolate pot de creme (listed on the menu as Chocolate Pot) which we put on reserve when we sit down because they sometimes run out of it). This place is casual and somewhat crowded but wonderful.

“Not as good as it used to be”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

The first half of Dmitri's life was as a neighborhood jewel serving fresh, tasty, simple Greek-style seafood in a small, lively corner location. Unfortunately, its luster has faded to that of a zircon in a cheap, nickel setting. The decor has not changed, which is to say that there is still no decor ( which you didn't notice previously because the food was so good) and equally unfortunate, the original Hmong chefs have gone. My shrimp pil-pil were dry, dry, dry. My partner had the chicken kebab 'special' which also consisted of chicken pieces that were dry, dry, dry. And since when is chicken breast on a kebab so "special"? Anybody can cook the life out of a chicken breast at home. The usual accompaniments of whitish rice and escarole were also a bore this time around. They used to be flavored and moist. Now it's like Uncle Ben's and school cafeteria, if you know what I mean. My partner's meal came out ten minutes after mine, to boot, and there were only three other tables seated. The only thing consistently good was the avocado citrus salad and warm, grilled pita. They need to restore some quality control if they are going to get any more of my business. And stop calling chicken kebab "special", cuz it ain't. This is supposed to be a seafood place, first and foremost. If there were a choice between poor and average, I would have chosen that as an overall rating.

The food has been consistent for as long as I can remember. We've been going here for 10+ years and all I can say is... Try it!

“My favorite quirky place to eat octopus.”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

It's in South Philly. There's no parking. They don't take reservations. You bump elbows with the people at the next table. You have to wait at the bar of a different restaurant for your table and then they come get you! It may be one of the most inconvenient restaurant business models I've ever seen, but I keep going back because it's just that good. And just that fun. You must get the smelts! Yes, I said smelts.
