We just returned from a wonderful dinner at Indonesia Restaurant. First of all, please be advised that the restaurant has moved. Their new address is 1725 Snyder Avenue, Philadelphia PA. They have a website at www.indonesiarestaurant.com.
If you have never had Indonesian food before, you should try it. It delicious, and not all of it is too hot or spicy. All of the food here is made to order. The prices are extremely reasonable, and the portions are huge, so come hungry.
We started with a shared appetizer of Soto Madura soup, which was a a huge pot of beef, tripe, cocoonut and turmeric topped with chips, fried onion, bean sprouts, cabbage and egg. We had never tried tripe before and this soup was exquisite. We were practically licking the bottom of our bowls it was so good. The soup was $7.00 and would have easily fed 4 people.
We then shared an appetizer of Lamb Satay. There were 5 sticks of satay, which were grilled and marinated on skewers and served with a peanut sauce. This lamb was mild and it was just perfectly cooked. The cost was $6.50.
We then both had the rice plates. My husband had Nasi Campur, which was like a mini "rijsttafel" served on one plate, consisting of a combination of chicken curry, special beef, egg, fried thin rice noodle, and served with Kroepek (shrimp chips) over steamed rice. I had the Nasi special, which was the same as above only served with special yellow rice and a friend potato beef ball that was just so good. Both huge platters were only $6.75 each. Again, the food was absolutely fantastic, the best meals we have had in a very long time. The platters were so big that we could not finish our food.
When the restaurant was on Race Street they used to serve rijsttafel, but since they moved they discontinued that. The rice platters though more than make up for it, because they are really like a rijsttafel all on one plate.
The waiters are very friendly and attentive, and we loved the restaurant so much that we will actually drive back to Philadelphia just to eat here. This restaurant has gotten top rating in the Zagat Survey from 2003-2007. Give it a try, you will never go back to boring Chinese food again.
