My son's fiance recommended Red Owl to celebrate his successful defense of his PhD Thesis; it was the perfect place. There was something for everyone: really good fish (snapper highly recommended), steak, chicken pot pie (yes they even have comfort food). The atmosphere was bustling but our service was attentive, friendly, and appropriately timely.

This recent addition to the Philly food scene is located in the new Monaco Hotel just kitty corner from Independence Hall and across from the Liberty Bell. It's an excellent location for those who want a great meal before or after doing some Philadelphia sightseeing.
We had dinner here the other night and I was surprised how busy the bar was with local business people after work. It seems to be the new hot spot for an after work cocktail.
We ate upstairs and I had a nice, fresh, local salad that I really enjoyed. I then had a steak with polenta fries. The steak was perfect, not too big, perfectly cooked and the polenta fries were something that I would order again.
Our server was very friendly and attentive. She was always in the area and easy to spot if we needed anything. (I hate servers who seem to run and hide and not easy to get when needed).
We were overlooking the bar so the view was lively and interesting.
Outside we could see the horse drawn carriages go by and we had a great view of Independence Hall. That alone is worth the trip here - to have lunch or dinner and a view of one of America's most important spots.
This was my first visit - but certainly not my last!

Hi James S,

I agree- it is amazing to be able to sit and enjoy dinner while also being able to look at the place where America was born! Since you live nearby, you'll have to come back in and taste your way through the menu. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,
Amy Binder

Just walked by and stopped in, so good we did it again a few days later. Once for lunch and once for dinner. Food and service were outstanding. The prices were quite reasonable for the high quality of food and service. Also a nice bar crowd.

During our stay at the Hotel Monaco (Kimpton), we ate in the Red Owl once and enjoy their delicious food on two occasions through room service. All the food we tried was superb, including the chicken pot pie, the monaco burger, their homemade sausage and the blt. You can't go wrong!

In the Kimpton Monaco, where we stayed. Beautifully crafted dishes with house-made pickled vegetables, charcuterie, and more. Great happy hour with featured beer, wine and fun cocktails, with half-priced appetizers. Great for families, but fun locals bar scene, too.
