Last minute reservations on a Thursday night offered a table either too early or later than what we really wanted but we're so glad we took the 5pm opening. I thought we might be the only ones eating that early but there were at least another 3 tables taken and by 6 or so many more were filled. We can see why.

The space itself is very comfortable and the staff very friendly.

There were 3 of us, so we got a chance to sample a variety of things - every one was a hit, from the special black squid-ink seafood pasta, to the chilled watermelon salad to the Fromage Blanc Toast.

Although the entrees were all exceptionally good, I think mine "won" - it being the Steamed Halibut surrounded by a fantastic basil broth, which was poured table-side. Next in line was the Black Sea Bass, followed by the Pork Blade Steak.

The Saison Dupont beer, in a champagne-sized bottle, went great with both the fish & meat. A drink you don't see too often, a Pimm's Cup, was also enjoyed with dinner.

So with the above drinks, a shared delicious parfait and 2 Cappuccino's, the bill with tip came to around $75 per person.

We are looking forward to dining here again but won't wait until the last minute to get a reservation.

Having read all of the rave reviews, our expectations were very high. We were seated in the rear, by the kitchen and the aromas of the food and the wood oven were our introduction to a wonderful meal. The grilled heart of romaine had a wonderful smoky flavor. We tried the lamb osso buco and it was outstanding. We had to order the grilled sourdough so the delightful mushroom-rich sauce wouldn't go to waste. Our waitress was helpful and attentive and her wine recommendations were just right. Definitely a top notch meal and we will be sure to return.

Vernick was all it was cracked up to be. Comfortable, casual atmosphere and simple dishes executed perfectly. Dinner started with an amuse bouche of butternut squash soup with a hint of cayenne and creme fraiche floated on top. It was dreamy and balanced and a great seasonal touch. We tried a few different toasts, the group concensus was that the charred spinach and fontina was the best. I had the black sea bass with tomato sauce. It did not disappoint. The brussel sprouts were caramelized deliciousness, the salads were beautiful and tasty. The best dessert was the apple crisp, the caramel was fantastic and balanced the tart apples. We sat downstairs and I really enjoyed watching the chefs in the open kitchen. We are a discerning bunch, and left with no complaints. Yum.

Amazing all around. The service was exceptional with staff making educated suggestions based on our questions. The food was incredible, one of the best sea bass dishes I have ever had. The atmosphere was lively and energetic without being noisy. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Simply put, this is one of the finest dining experiences I have ever had...and I have been in the restaurant business for over 30 years. A lot goes into a statement like this! The simple truth is there are many good restaurants that hit on one, two or three aspects of a great dining experience. The tuna was fantastic, the beef tartare was out of this world, our pasta with duck was fresh, tasty and a huge delight and the brussell sprouts were simply the best I have ever had. Vernick Food and Drink hits on all of them.

1. Food - can't say enough about our experience of the food. From the knowledgeable waitress, to the proper and exciting description of the items, to the presentation and finally to the flavors. Wow ! Fresh ingredients, expertly put together, creative presentation and just really wonderful tastes.

2. Service - from the inquiry over the phone to the hostesses to the waiters and waitresses, hands down this was pne of the most pleasant aspects of this business. Oh yes, this is what so many people who open up restaurants forget...they are running... a business. Vernick's gets it; customer first, be professional and pleasant, train everyone to perfection and be passionate about customers and what you do. Our waitress was a lovely young woman who knew everything about the food, presented it in an unpretentious way and was delightful. Other waitresses attened to our table during the veening because they all cover each other's backs and even took the time to say goodbye. Bingo; Vernick has it.

3. Ambiance/Atmosphere - the interesting thing about Vernick is that it appeared t me that anyone could feel at home here; hispsters, a work crowd, parents, grnadparents. They seem to be able to make a seamless blend between having energy but not have it take over the place. Kudos to having a beat and some funk but not to the point of being deafening!!! Also the feel of the restaurant is upscale, comfortable. It makes the perfect coupling to a fabulous meal.

4. Price - what I so appreciated about the restaurant is they have not gotten out of control with their pricing. The cost for the meal is very reasonable and that ingratiates a business to repeat customers.

5. Portion Size - most restaurants today are turning out monster portions of really bad food or tiny portions for crazy sums of money because they believe it's the in thing to do. Vernick gets the idea of making great food at reasonable prices and creating a portion size that allows you as a diner to experience the greatness of this chef without feeling overloaded.

6. Ownership - any owner who is still walking the floors of the restaurant with a baby about 2 weeks away!!! really cares about her business. She stopped by our table and within seconds we felt like old friends. We were so happy for her and her husband; the chef and told them they easily rival the great restaurants of New York.

This is a great restaurant. Treat yourself while you are in Philly!
