Owner description: The Barnes Foundation houses one of the finest collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French painting in the world. An extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse provide a depth of work by these artists that is unavailable elsewhere. Established as an educational institution, the Barnes carries out its mission teaching classes in its galleries and Arboretum.

We loved the 181 paintings of Renoir, plus the other gems of Picasso, Monet, etc. that adorn its walls. Worth a 2nd visit, just to see this awesome collection. The Foundation has done a superb job in presenting its masterpieces in a very enlightening way, combining the visual with the educational. Coincidentally, #181 of Renoir, "The Luncheon of the Boating Party" is my favorite.

This is one of the great museums of the country with a fabulous collection of Impressionist works and a great representation of other artists like Matisse. The works are hung or arranged exactly as Dr. Barnes intended. It may not always be immediately clear why he intended to create certain ensambles, but at times you can discern the subtle and variegated relationships he wished to highlight in terms of color, line, texture or theme. He wanted to focus the viewer's attention less on the name of the individual artist or the title of the work and more on the work itself and its relationship to other works. Therefore the artists' names are never prominently displayed. However, each room has a guide which will identify artists, their works, and their dates.
We used an audio guide. I did not find the commentary particularly useful or helpful. The best way to approach the art is to view everything with open, fresh and unbiased eyes.

This is one of the great collections and happily, the new building retains the unique flavor of the Barnes. Enhanced as it is by excellent lighting it is now easily accessed.

The impressionist art in the Barnes is incredible. I've read the value is more than 25 billion dollars but it's really priceless. The art took my breath away.

Advance reservations area must. I called t he number but you could reserve on line.

Love the new location and maintained its original layout from Marion. Docent tours are excellent just think they should be longer for the price- felt a little rushed.
