Owner description: The Barnes Foundation houses one of the finest collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French painting in the world. An extraordinary number of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne and Matisse provide a depth of work by these artists that is unavailable elsewhere. Established as an educational institution, the Barnes carries out its mission teaching classes in its galleries and Arboretum.

This is a refreshing facility; a modern, comfortable, relaxed, personal feel to the museum, unlike most other museums. If you're an art buff this collection will knock your socks off, if your not you’ll still enjoy and appreciate the presentation of the collection and Dr. Albert Barnes. The combination of post-impressionist and early modern art, Pennsylvania German furniture, sculpture and metalwork displayed in a series of well laid out rooms have of home like feel. The exhibit includes an almost endless collection of artwork by Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Renoir, Soutine, Vincent van Gogh and others. I would highly recommend the audio tour on your first trip; you’ll quickly become left in bewilderment without it.

Pros: Timed entry prevents a crowded atmosphere. A very pleasant staff.

Cons: You have to book your tickets online at least a week in advance; I would guess three or four weeks in the summer. Philly parking wasn’t bad in this area during our visit, good luck in summer.

This is a most see art museum in Philly. Dr. Barnes organized all the photos into ensembles, and it's amazing to view! The Renoirs, Picasso's, Modglinanis...were just some of the few artists whose works were impeccably displayed! Beautiful works and a must see in Philly!

The move to a modern center city location has done wondrous things for this fine collection of Impressionist arts (along with the assorted modern pieces, ancient pieces, and cabInet hardware all thrown together in a somewhat random way). It all works in some strange cacophony. We also heard a free concert of tango music and dance. Great fun, great acoustics.

A terrific new addition to the musuems along Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Plan on spending the day to see it all. Have lunch in the Garden Restuarant in the Museum

You'll want to read the history of the collection to add to your enjoyment of the museum. It is a good collection of impressionists but incorporates a variety of art forms including such things as door hinges, chests, table ware, etc. Over a hunder Renoitrs and many Cezanne's.
