“Great tapas dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I had an excellent dinner at Jamonera, probably one of the best meals we've had in a long time! We sat at the bar and received average service there, not bad but not great. We both enjoyed everything we ordered. We had the jamon sampler, the pan con tomate, the melon and jamon, the hanger steak and the Spanish breakfast. The timing of the different tapas being delivered was perfect. We never had more than 2 tapas at a time, and we never felt rushed or felt like we were waiting for the next round. We had the bunuelos for dessert which was incredible. We will definitely return but will be sure to get a reservation so we can have a table.

“# 28 of top 50???”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2013

We were excited to have dinner at Jamonera, given its high ratings, and interesting menu. We arrived on time for our reservation, and were promptly seated. The restaurant is small and seating is tight, and it's dark inside. Not a problem for us, but it is a fact worth mentioning. Our server was business-like, if not indifferent.

In a tapas-style restaurant we should have been put on guard when we were told it was preferred that we order all our choices at one time, rather than a few at a time, "to allow the kitchen to best take care of your order. The menu we were able to choose from was an abbreviated version of what is shown on the web site. Again, not a problem if the kitchen is demanding of fresh ingredients, but also worth noting. We ordered the Tortilla Espanola, which was a cake slice of lightly sauced tortillas. Very nice, although a bit bland (it is a stack of tortillas, after all). Next, the Crispy Cana de Cabra salad, also OK, but the fried cheese buried beneath the greens, and with underwhelming flavor. Other dishes?...A wonderful octopus dish that even my non-octopus loving wife raved about; a quail egg and duck sausage that was very good, but placed on a too-thick slab of chewy bread. The bummer dish was a $17 cheese and meat board that was piled with bread (the only bread to appear on the table, other than with the egg and duck), olives (we already had a ramekin of olives on the table) and greens like we had just eaten in a salad....The cheese? We were given four, two-bite pieces of flavor-tonally similar styles. The meat? We received four, paper thin, Quarter sized pieces of a coarse-style sausage and four, paper thin salami-style sausage. They were all tasty, but could hardly have amounted to an ounce and a half all put together. Other minor issues...We ordered a bottle of white wine (in July) and had to ask that either the bar to keep it cool or to please provide an ice bucket. And, the pacing of dishes at a not-so-busy time was really about the kitchen, not us.

Overall, we felt a bit let down, having been put on guard that we should order all plates at once so that the kitchen could orchestrate our orders, and then being served dishes that filled the spectrum of elation and disappointment. It was an average meal delivered with just-average service, but maybe an off night for the restaurant. Even on a possibly off night, why is this restaurant is rated in the Philadelphia Magazine's top 30?

Everything was delicious! The Pap Frita is the die for! The only downside is that the area is a little tight, but we had a corner seat and were more than comfortable!

I've been to Jamonera several times and always enjoy it. The food is very good and Brian is one of the best mixologists I've encounterd. You won't be disappointed.

We took the tasting menu and everything was so... tasty !!! The mussels with corn was really amazing, and the wine pairing was also a good choice. Nothing bad at all : good ambiance, good music, and the service was perfect. A very good place to go if you're in Philly !!!
