“Don't ask for red gravy”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

This is a wonderful restaurant tucked away on Sansom Street in Center City Philly. The weeknight I was there it was packed, both floors and the bar too. It's a great bar by the way. The food is upscale, creative Italian and it's really good, a great selection of imaginative dishes. The cooks obviously know what they are doing. Diverse wines both by the bottle and glass. Excellent, welcoming staff preside over a really lively scene. The place is high energy. It's not a romantic place to whisper nothings to someone, so skip the nothings and go for the food and the atmosphere. You'll be glad you did. I was.

“Excellent Food, Noizy to chat”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

I liked the restaurant a lot for its extravert and capable personnel, excellent food (creative, modern Italian cooking with only excellent dishes on its varied menu).
It does not get the full five stars because the way the restaurant is set up and decorated creates a very loud environment. I had real difficulties understanding the waiters and my table companions.
I would still recommend it though!

“All-around great experience”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

2 people, 4 courses each, all brilliant. Hostesses were pleasant and welcoming; wait-staff efficient and knowledgeable; sommelier extremely helpful and obviously someone who enjoys his work; chef first rate. Kudos to Starr (again) and to Chef Painter. It's been awhile since I've had a meal this consistently good. Oh, and the atmosphere was lovely, understated and most importantly not noisy. Can't wait to go back.

“Italian food at new heights”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

This was our second visit on the night of a wine tasting event. There were 6 courses with a set menu and wine pairings with each. The experience was different from selecting from the menu but really highlighted Chef Painter's breath of expertise. However, our previous experience last year was also wonderful. We started out with a fresh pea soup with lobster and creme fresh. It was delicious. We then had a sea bass crudo with fennel and grapefruit. This was followed by 2 pasta delights: a rabbit agnolatti and a taglietella with lamb ragu. Both were outstanding. We then had a small portion of strip steak with a fantastic sauce. The wines truly complemented the food. The meal ended with a pineapple zabaglione with moscato. The staff was extremly attentive. Very knowledgeable about each dish as well as the wines. Great experience. Pricey but worth it.

“Good but overpriced”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

Tasty and nice ambience, but portions are quite small and expensive. $8 for a liter of water. $8 for two tablespoons of gelato. I've usually found that an antipasti and primi dish makes a good meal at an Italian restaurant, but it took two antipastis, a primi and a dolce to fill me up. $235 for three people with one of their least expensive wines. Service was a bit slow.
