Owner description: Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse opened its doors in East Fairmount Park in 1899. Funded by Richard and Sarah Smith, the site was dedicated to the memory of their adult son, Stanfield. Smith’s beautiful, 24,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – 6 1/2 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment.Smith’s mission is to provide children 10 and under from diverse backgrounds with free and accessible one-of-a-kind play experiences that meet their physical, behavioral, and developmental needs.

The concept is simple- three floors of a Victorian mansion filled with books and toys where kids enjoy unstructured play- but it is an absolute winner. My (almost) 3 year old thought this was the greatest place he'd ever seen and didn't want to ever leave. The outdoor playground was incredible too. If you have kids, this is one of the must-see attractions in the Northeast. The mansion itself would probably appeal to kids up to 5, while the playground would be enjoyed by kids up to 12 or so, as it has swings and enormous rope-climbing contraption.

My 21 month old had a blast here! The playground outside is split into several sections that help to keep kids of like ages together. The old wooden slide did get a little hectic but two workers there did their best to keep the crowd of excited kids in order. The inside of the mansion was loaded with what looked to be donated toys and books with a few bigger custom pieces such as a kitchen, wooden train and tricycle track in the basement.

The attraction costs nothing and water is available for $1 at the entrance. Well worth the visit! I would strongly recommend visiting on Tuesdays 10am-1pm when it is families only, no group tours. If you get there at 10am you will have 30 min to an 1 hour of peace and quiet until the crowds really start funneling in!

Our 17 month old had a great time exploring the playground and riding the giant wood slide (so did we!). It's nice that there are separate playgrounds designed for younger and older kids.

This is a great place to spend the afternoon with your kids. I've been here numerous times and enjoyed it every time time. The place is clean and well taken care of. My kids love it. If you are visiting Philly and are looking for something to do with your kids stop on by. This place is free but accepts donations.

Wow - a very nice park that has play areas for children of all ages. My girls (ages 6 & 8) had fun taking mommy and daddy on the wooden slide many times -- you needed a potato sack to go down it. The play area was clean and nice - the equipment well maintained and a lot of fun! There was also a great area for the under 5 crowd and the mansion itself would have been perfect if my kids were younger - three levels of a house that have different play activities -- tricycles area in the basement, climbing things and kitchen areas, books, etc in other areas.. Wish I had a place like this near me (we're from NY). No fee, but donations accepted - and you'll want to give just to continue to maintain this place which is an asset. Bathrooms are there too. Really nice time. Place is closed Jan - March I believe.
