Owner description: Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse opened its doors in East Fairmount Park in 1899. Funded by Richard and Sarah Smith, the site was dedicated to the memory of their adult son, Stanfield. Smith’s beautiful, 24,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – 6 1/2 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment.Smith’s mission is to provide children 10 and under from diverse backgrounds with free and accessible one-of-a-kind play experiences that meet their physical, behavioral, and developmental needs.

This is a great place to take kids. The area is a little rough and could use some cleaning up. Its hard to find if you aren't aware where it already is so be sure to have Mapquest directions or GPS handy.

This is a wonderful, free, park for kids -- maybe 9 and younger. There's a dedicated "tot lot" for ages 5 and under. Our kids (ages 5 and 1) were in heaven there. Equipment is all new and well maintained. Free parking. Really can't beat it!

A GREAT PLACE. Huge giant slide was a hit. It rained so we ate on the covered porch.

My son had a great time playing there. Very colorful. Lots of outdoor activities. The highlight for my son was the giant slide - he had a blast there and refused to leave. The indoor part feels similar to any children's museum. You can easily spent a whole day there with your kids. All these are free. The downside for us was there is no food vendor close by but you can ask for the menu of a pizza place that delivers to Smith.

Its a Philly institution. I took my kids there and now my grandkids. Indoors is restricted to younger children. Outdoors is for all kids. Must try the outdoor slide using a burlap bag. In Fairmount park and somewhat hard to find and the hours are restricted. Call or go online first. Every Philly kid should go there at least once. Its free.
