This is the original Wannamaker's (first dept. store in the U.S.) it was like walking into a store in the 1950s! If you like nostalgia - this is the place for you.

Thank you, Macy's for preserving the glory of the original Wanamaker's department store on Market Street, where - after its opening in 1911, attended by President Taft - it became customary to "meet at the Eagle," the majestic brass bird at the center of the breath-taking multi-storied & gilded inner court. Listening to the world's largest pipe organ, housed on the balcony & played daily, is a transcendent experience & it is no exaggeration to say that this gilded relic is a must-see on the list of significant historic sights in Philadelphia.

100 years later there are always good buys to be found in the modern trendy Macy's, which carries on the once innovative practice of a grand emporium that offered a wide range of products at standardized prices.

Unfortunately the original elegant tearoom is available only for private parties, but two coffee bars, including a Starbucks, just off the lobby offer the usual fare.

I grew up in NYC (close to Manhattan's flagship Macy's) and had forgotten what it's like to shop in such a beautiful space. When my daughter and I walked in the security team was on it's way out - in hot pursuit of a shoplifter. Yikes!

This is a great place. The audio tour works really well and offers many interesting facts and anecdotes about life in the prison. Even though the place is being cleaned up and restored it maintains the feel of a real ruin.
