My first visit to Macy's (Philadelphia) to visit Santa and watch their Christmas light show was a super way to usher in the holiday!

Their Dickens Village attraction was entertaining as well as effective in managing the families waiting their turn to visit with Santa. Santa was authentic and the photographers were accommodating, allowing us to coordinate a number of family poses.

We stayed for the Christmas light show, which I understand is a long-standing tradition dating back to the days of Wannamaker ownership of the store. Families can perch at any point at the rails of one of three floors or take the children to the ground level where a large area has been carpeted for children to seat themselves comfortably.

Christmas in the city has taken on all new meaning for me!

Hints: Get there early, visit with Santa first, and stay on for the light show...we were on our way to other adventures by 11:30 am!

The light show during the holidays is great! Take a seat in the red carpet by the eagle with your kids and take in the breath taking light show (shown on the hour every hour-starting the Fri after Thanksgiving until New Years Eve) Dickens Village is really nice (located on the 3rd floor) This Macy's is laid out nicely and hearing the organ play is nostalgic. Highly recommend visiting during the holiday season. The windows are decorated and is just up to par with NYC Macy's

The store's grand court, featuring a soaring ceiling, marble columns and the worlds largest pipe organ is truly a sight to behold. This is retail in grand style. At Christmas they have a "Dickens village" with anamatronic figures telling the Christmas Carol story. It a beautiful walk-through display with 26 seperate staged scenes. The line will get very long on Saturdays and Sundays in December. I recommend going early on Sunday (10:00am) walk throught the dickens village them come out to shop the rest of the store.

The Grand Court light show is good and runs on the hour. At least twice a day an organist plays the "Wanamaker Organ" which is built into the store. It is the largest operable pipe organ in the world, containing over 28,000 pipes. You can meet the organist and tour the organ console after each performance.

Although now a regular Macy's, this was home to the John Wanamaker department store, a Philadelphia institution and a prominent landmark. This is really a notable tourist attraction for three reasons:

1. Beautiful, massive building with large first floor attrium, invoking the grandeur of the 1920's
2. 30,000 pipe organ - the largest working pipe organ in the world. It plays at noon every day the store is open and sometimes in the evening.
3. The 2,500 pound, very large statue of an eagle, which was a remnant of the 1904 Lousiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. "Meet me at the eagle" is a classic, landmark Philly phrase! Go there to touch the Eagle for luck!

It is unfortunate that Macy's is not doing more to promote this as a tourist attraction and historic site. I tried to find a photo or a postcard of either the Eagle or the organ, but no luck. You would hope that they would put a gift shop/ history shop next to the Eagle.

The store is right next to City Hall and definitely worth a visit to see the Eagle and the organ.
