My fiancée and I love zoos and we use to visit zoos in the different cities we visit. We went at Philadelphia zoo on January 2013, just for a couple of hours before closing and it was so great. As it was winter, some animals were impossible to see but those we saw were amazing. A large variety of animals, really well exposed ! The Big Cats Exhibit is outstanding !!!!
I don't understand why many people say it is a big zoo and that we need good shoes to visit it because it is tiring. We found it quite "small" or with a good size for a center city zoo. The Bronx Zoo is so much larger and in France, we have really bigger zoos. So don't worry it is not too big.
Concerning the price we found it very affordable ($14), and it is included in the Philadelphia City Pass. For example the Bronx Zoo is $20 and you have to pay extra fees to see gorillas ($5), butterflies ($5), black panther ($5). Or you can take the full experience pass which is $27. On the contrary in Philadelphia, for $14 you can see all the animals of the zoo.
We recommend it without hesitation !

We had a great time here. It's really cheap and they have lots of animals. The only downfall is that the warm climate animals you don't get to see during the colder months. But for January we saw every animal the zoo had to offer except the Giraffe and Rhino. So I really can't complain. Just going to go back in the summer to see them again and hopefully all of them!

We are members of the Philadelphia Zoo and enjoy going several times a year. We take our grandchildren and really enjoy all the zoo has to offer. The animals are well taken care of, there are new above ground trails for monkeys and orangutans to explore, and the animals are given lots of stimulation so they do not look bored or depressed. The zoo is clean and well maintained. A new parking garage is being built as parking is the hardest thing about getting to the zoo. It is a treat to go any time of the year. There are several special events each year open to members and non-members. We've adopted animals for our grands and they love seeing "their animals."

Some time ago the Zoo offered a broad variety of animals. But bit by bit the collection is decreasing. We understand it is a matter of costs, may be of specialization or breeding programs. We understand another reason to reorganize is the well being of the animals, demanding more space, etc. However, having said this: one goes to Zoo to see animals you don't see around the house. Especially animals that are pretty rare and not the more common ones.

On the other hand we see an extension of the kids zoo, introduction of pony rides in the aprk but the once so appreciated gondola is gone. Again we understand one has to coop with the demands of the time era but it looks we are heading towards an attraction park versus a zoo. So it is hard to say not knowing what the end result will be.
