Owner description: You can find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier here. This too, in colonial times, was where enslaved Africans were once held before being sold, and it has also served as a burial ground for white and black victims of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic.

With all the tourists who flock to Independence National Park, how few of them visit, or are even aware of this park that is less than 50' from Independence Mall?
The park itself is pleasant and fairly quiet. Usually the site of a tomb of the unknown(s) gets more respect and visitation. The Tomb of the Unknown (Revolutionary War) Soldier is very a worthwhile stop. It is an attractive monument with an eternal flame, commemorating the 2,000+ unknown soldiers and POWs buried in mass pits beneath the park. It gives you something very important to reflect on, in an environment conducive to reflection.
If you need more, the park is home to Philadelphia's only "Moon Tree". Kind of a neat attraction in itself.

It's a very nice place to visit and where to rest. It has a quite simple memorial of unknown Revolutionary War soldiers from Washington's army, an eternal flame and is sourrounded by other historic places. When in Philly, don't forget to visit it!

Washington Square Park is a very pretty little park and well worth a visit. There's not loads to see but a nice place to walk around and very close to many other old Philly attractions.

Washington Square Park contains the remains of a large number of unknown Revolutionary War soldiers from Washington's army. An eternal flame, the flags of the 13 colonies, and a single tomb provide the simple memorial. The park is tree sheltered and surrounded by historic houses. It is a nice quiet place to visit after walking the other historic offerings of Philadelphia.

This square is hallowed ground. Thousands are buried under the verdant green grass. There are markers around the square but the most incredible place is the tomb of the unknown soldiers of the Revolutionary War. The walk up to it, flanked by the flags of the states, shows the dramatic monument with the eternal flame burning in front of it. The quotes on both sides of the monument as well as the one on top of the tomb are stirring (though hard to capture). We spent some time there reflecting on this solemn and sacred place while all about us children played in the fountain, others read on the benches seemingly oblivious of the historic nature of the square, which I found just right. They accept their freedoms and bask in them, while these souls rest under their feet.
