Owner description: As close to the proverbial money-tree as you'll get. The U.S. Mint turns out 1.5 million coins per hour, and you can see how they do it.

But the waste of time will be the BEST part of your visit to the mint. The worst part will be dealing with the horribly rude mint police who have obviously been watching too many Diehard movies (and also get confused by a pocket full of change setting off their metal detector, yet INSIST quite rudely that you keep your change in your pocket).

The rest of your tour will be a self guided walk down a very long hallway with windows far above the mint floor, with signs that look like they haven't been updated since the 1960s.

All in all, an firm argument for getting rid of the penny.

This is a great, free tour. Only takes an hour, but very interesting, and easy to get to. I recommend it! Check the hours before going, as they differe from the other National sites in the area.

Great place to visit!! The kids loved it!! No admission fee! Staff was polite! Self guided tour was well done. The visit is not complete without a visit to the gift shop! The gift shop has great collectibles available for purchase

The self-guided tour of the mint lets you decide how much you want to know about making coinage. Tour includes a walk along a corridor high above the actual mint floor, and displays explain what you are looking at in practice on the floor. Impressive how automated everything is. Displays explain making coins from design to final quality control. No free samples.

This will appeal to kids and adults who like to see how things are made. There is a compact exhibit on the history of coins in America. I particularly liked seeing the collection of hobo coins. These were carved by hand and traded amongst hobos traveling on trains during the Depression.
A U route takes you above the factory floor to see coin making in action. It was interesting, but it would be great if they could find a way to show you close ups of finished coins. Perhaps just a video camera and a screen would be nice. It would really help you in appreciating the work that goes into the final product. I also would like to see more information on how they choose designs, and maybe some rejected designs would be good. In all though, it is a great way to spend an hour not just doing historical stuff. There is a fairly large gift shop with large replica coins that would make fun souvenirs.
