This little gem gives a beautiful presentation of Jewish history. Sometimes moving, sometimes fascinating. Interesting architecture. Includes local history!

“Land of Opportunity”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Situtated on the mall between Independence Hall & the Constitution Museum, the Museum of American Jewish History broadens the framework of traditional American history; so this recent visitor chooses to think the Founders themselves would be pleased as well with this recent addition that illustrates how & why over the centuries Jewish immigrants have found America a land of opportunity..

With a panorama at the entrance of prominent Jewish Americans, interactive exhibits & provocative videos, the Museum documents the participation & contributions of Jewish Americans from colonization - with a focus on Philadelphia - thru the Civil War, the settlement of the West, Industrialization and the horror of the Holocaust. Altho unrealstically neat & clean, re-creations of a tenement room on the Lower East Side of NYC & a fully equipped covered wagon are especially effective learning environments for younger visitors.

An attractice shop on the ground floor offers a nice selection of unusual gifts & souvenirs.

“This is not a "Jewish" museum -- it's an American History Museum.”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

We stopped in here one morning thinking we'd kill a couple of hours, and instead we wound up closing the place down! And I wish I'd had another day to spend. At the completion of our visit, one of the docents asked us to explain our reasons, as gentiles from Texas, for visiting the museum. I couldn't articulate an answer for her at that time, but I'll try to do so here. No, we're not Jewish, but we are big fans of American History. And that's what this place is -- a celebration of the Jews' place in our nation's history. If you have any sense of history, you understand that our country would be a very different place, indeed a much less vibrant place, without the contributions of our Jewish citizens. Yes, they have been unjustly persecuted in America, and that fact is certainly discussed. But the museum also seeks to give visitors an appreciation of the Jews' contributions to American society. If you are interested in American History, see this place, whether you are Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Buddhist, or whatever. It will be a highlight of your visit to Philadelphia.
